Freedom Bells Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe uniflora 'Freedom Bells') is an easy care succulent for baskets, windowboxes and pots. It stays about 30cm tall and spreads to 60cm, with small, flat, oval green leaves on slender reddish stems that trail over the edge of a container. In winter and spring it hangs out vivid red or warm peach-coral bells, just when most gardens are short of colour.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers in the quiet months. The hanging bells open in winter and spring, in vivid red or warm peach-coral.
-
A trailing habit. The semi-trailing stems spill softly over pot rims, basket edges and the lip of a windowbox.
-
Warm stem colour. Reddish stems tone with the flowers and keep the plant interesting between bloom seasons.
-
Very little care. Like most succulents it needs little water, and weekly watering in the milder seasons is plenty.
-
Indoors or out. It is ideal in any well lit area, inside the house, on the balcony or in the garden.
Where it works best
Hanging baskets and windowboxes. The trailing stems show off best when they can hang. Hang it out of reach of pets and children, because this plant is toxic if eaten.
Pots and balconies. One plant is enough for a small pot. In a mixed succulent bowl, plant it near the edge so the stems can drape.
Rockeries and gravel beds. Plant 50cm apart in free draining, even stony ground. Keep the crown above the soil so water never pools around it.
Growing Freedom Bells Kalanchoe in Australia
Position and climate. It suits full sun, but does best with a little shade from the direct midday glare. It needs protection from frost, so in frosty districts grow it in a pot and bring it under cover for winter. Indoors, choose a bright spot near a window.
Soil. Free draining sandy or even rocky soil is ideal, in a pot or in the garden. Use a cactus and succulent mix in containers, and set the crown above the soil surface.
Water and feed. Water weekly in spring and autumn to keep the plant lush, then cut back in winter and midsummer when growth slows. Feed in spring with an organic liquid fertiliser mixed at half strength.
Pruning. Little is needed. Snip off spent flower stems after the display and trim any straggly growth to keep the shape tidy.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Freedom Bells Kalanchoe as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly once planted, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes start small and fill out over a season, while the potted packs suit anyone planting a run of baskets or borders. Tubes are supplied by our grower, so availability comes and goes. The tube shows as sold out when the grower has none, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is it safe for pets?
No. Kalanchoes are toxic to cats, dogs and other animals if they are eaten, so keep this plant out of reach or choose a pet safe alternative.
How often should I water it?
About once a week in spring and autumn, less in winter and midsummer. Let the soil dry between drinks, because soggy roots do more harm than dry ones.
Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, in a well lit position. A bright windowsill suits it, and it can go outside to a lightly shaded spot in the warmer months.
