The Charcoal Large Square Self Watering Pot is a textured PP plastic planter with a reservoir, an aeration and wicking tray, and overflow holes built into the base. It comes in three sizes, 270mm, 400mm and 500mm, holding from about 12 litres up to 58 litres of mix. Square pots sit flush to a wall and butt against each other, which is why they beat round ones along a balcony edge.

  • Reservoir plus overflow. The pot holds water in reserve, and overflow holes release the excess during heavy watering or a downpour.
  • Aeration and wicking tray. Tray wells draw water up into the root zone instead of leaving it in a dead layer at the base.

Sizes and what fits in them

Widths are the measured pot; soil volumes are approximate.

  • 270mm. 27cm across and 25cm high, about 12 to 14 litres. Indoor plants and compact foliage.
  • 400mm. 39cm across and 34cm high, about 28 to 32 litres. A feature plant, or an established shrub.
  • 500mm. 50cm across and 42cm high, 58 litres. Large feature plants, and the size to pick when the pot is doing the job of a garden bed.

The 500mm is made in charcoal only.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Polypropylene with a textured charcoal finish. Light enough that a planted 270mm pot moves with one hand, and rigid enough to hold shape at 500mm.

Outdoors. UV resistant and rated for indoor and outdoor use: patios, balconies, entries and open garden.

Drainage. Water sits in the base and wicks upwards, and overflow holes release anything above that level. Indoors, stand it on a tray, because the overflow runs after a heavy watering.

What to expect when it arrives

Pots ship empty, with the reservoir and tray in place and no plant or potting mix. Check the tray is seated before you fill: a two minute job at the start, and far harder with 58 litres of wet mix in a 500mm pot on top. Water in from the surface for the first few weeks, then let the reservoir take over. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
