Cube, tall square or taper

The proportions do different jobs. A low cube suits clipped balls, succulents and anything you want to read as grounded and solid. Tall squares, like the 300mm grey tall square planter, add height beside doors and gates without spreading into the walkway, and a pair either side of an entrance is the most reliable formal move in the book. Tapered squares soften the geometry slightly and make repotting easier, because the root ball slides out instead of jamming.

For sizing, keep the opening 3cm to 5cm wider than the nursery pot you are dropping in, or 10cm wider than the root ball if planting direct.

Materials and weather

StoneLite and GRC are lightweight composite concretes: the crisp cast look at a weight one person can still manage, and both stand up to frost and coastal exposure in every state. The terrazzo squares carry a speckled stone finish over a fibreglass core. The charcoal plastic squares are the budget workhorses, and the large self watering version suits balconies where daily watering was never going to happen. In hot northern and inland gardens, remember that dark squares in western sun run hot, so lighter finishes are kinder to roots.

Setup and care

Outdoor squares need drainage holes plus feet or risers, especially on decks, and the square rubber pot risers in this collection exist for exactly that. A 40cm cube takes about 30 litres of potting mix, so fill it where it will live. Composite and terrazzo finishes wipe clean with a damp cloth; no sealing required.

What goes either side of a front door?

A matched pair of tall squares or tall tapered squares, sized so the pot is roughly a third the height of the finished planting. Keep both pots and both plants identical; symmetry is the whole trick.

Do square pots hold more soil than round ones?

Yes, roughly 20 to 25 per cent more than a round pot of the same width, which means more root room and slower drying in the same footprint.
