That means topping up once a week or so rather than watering daily through an Australian summer, and far better odds for balcony pots, office plants and anyone who travels. How a self watering pot works

A reservoir in the base holds water beneath the root zone, and the potting mix wicks it upward as it dries. The plant takes what it needs, so you top up through a fill point every week or two instead of watering daily. In summer heat expect to refill weekly for a thirsty plant in full sun. Through winter, a full reservoir can last three to four weeks.

Choosing the right style

Match the shape to the job. The Roman and Oslo troughs, both around 600mm long, suit balcony rails, window ledges and herb runs, and sit alongside the rest of our trough planters. The Milano and Armour egg planters are the feature pieces for doorways and patios, sharing their soft curves with our egg and round pots. The Greenville and Modern planters are the all rounders for decks and living rooms, and the self watering hanging basket tames the fastest drying position in any garden.

Potting up correctly

Plant directly into the pot rather than hiding a nursery pot inside, because wicking only works when the mix is in contact with the reservoir. Use a quality free draining potting mix, water from the top for the first two to three weeks while the roots settle, then switch to filling the reservoir. Outdoors, keep the overflow outlet clear so a summer storm cannot flood the base.

Are self watering pots good indoors?

They are one of the best choices. The enclosed base means no saucer and no drips on timber floors, and moisture stays steadier than most of us manage by hand. Keep the reservoir low in winter when growth slows.

What plants suit them?

Leafy tropicals, ferns, herbs and vegetables thrive on the constant moisture. Succulents and cacti need a dry spell between drinks, so give those a standard pot from our small pots range instead.

Can they live outside in the weather?

Yes. These are tough UV resistant planters made for Australian sun, and unlike terracotta they will not crack in a frost. Being light for their size, they are also easy to shift while planted.
