The Black Milano Self Watering Planter is an egg shaped planter made in Italy from 100 percent recycled plastic, with a water reservoir and tray built into the base. It comes in three sizes, 380mm, 480mm and 580mm, and works indoors or out. The point of it is the reservoir: the plant draws water up as it needs it, so the gap between waterings stretches out.

  • Watering becomes a weekly job. The tray and reservoir hold water below the root zone and release it gradually, evening out the swings that kill container plants.
  • Recycled plastic, and recyclable again. The planter is 100 percent recycled material and fully recyclable.

  • Light for its size. Even the 580mm can be positioned by hand before it is filled, which concrete at that diameter cannot.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three sizes, named by diameter. Volumes below allow for the reservoir underneath.

  • 380mm. About 38cm across and 32cm tall, roughly 22 to 26 litres. Suits indoor foliage and compact feature plants.
  • 480mm. About 48cm across and 40cm tall, roughly 40 to 45 litres. The size for a shrub you want to keep.
  • 580mm. About 58cm across and 47cm tall, roughly 65 to 75 litres. Enough for a large shrub or a small tree.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Recycled plastic, moulded in Italy in a black egg form. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth or hose it down.

Outdoors. UV resistant and rated for outdoor use, so it can live on a patio, a balcony or a terrace. It is light, worth remembering on an exposed balcony with a tall plant.

Drainage. Drainage is handled by the reservoir, so there is nothing to drill and no liner needed. Top the reservoir up as it drops rather than watering the surface constantly, and outdoors in a wet month let it run down before refilling.

What to expect when it arrives

Planters ship empty, with the reservoir components in place. Plants and mix are sold separately, and a free draining mix suits a self watering system better than a heavy one. Water from the top when you first plant, so roots find their way down to the reservoir.
