Callistemon Wilderness White

Callistemon 'Wilderness White' (Callistemon hybrid) is the bottlebrush to plant where the ground stays wet. It holds at about 1.5m each way, carries cream and white brushes instead of the usual red, and unlike most flowering shrubs it will sit in a soggy corner without sulking. Position and climate. Full sun gives the heaviest flowering and the densest habit. It suits warm temperate, subtropical, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens, and it is frost hardy, so cold southern districts and the tablelands are fine. In the wet tropics the humidity is heavier than this hybrid prefers.

Soil. Almost anything, including clay and poor sandy ground. Mulch to 75mm, kept clear of the stem.

Water and feed. Water deeply once or twice a week through the first summer, then only in long dry spells. A low phosphorus native fertiliser in early spring is all it asks.

Pruning. Trim straight after each flush, cutting just behind the spent brushes. That is what keeps it dense. Neglected plants can be cut back hard, since it reshoots from old wood.

How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?

One metre apart in a single row. At that spacing the plants meet within two to three seasons and hold foliage low, where most informal hedges thin out.

Will it survive in a wet spot?

Yes, better than almost anything else that flowers. It handles ground that stays damp after rain and sits in a drainage line, though permanently submerged roots are still too much.

Can I keep it smaller than 1.5m?

Yes. Trim after each flowering flush and it will hold comfortably at 1m to 1.2m. Cutting harder than that reduces flowering, since the brushes form on the season's new growth.

Does it need special fertiliser?

Use a native blend low in phosphorus. Callistemon is more forgiving than grevillea, but high phosphorus garden feeds will still yellow the foliage.
