Bush Glow Kangaroo Paw (Anigozanthos hybrid 'Bush Glow') is a small, bushy kangaroo paw about 50cm tall and 50cm wide that glows orange and gold. Its paws run from deep orange at the base to golden yellow at the tip, with lime green inside, and they appear from spring right through to autumn. At this size it fits balconies, patios and the front of a border.
Why you'll love it
-
A glowing colour mix. Deep orange shading to golden yellow, with a lime green inside, gives each flower more depth than a single colour.
-
A very long season. Plenty of small flowers open from spring through to autumn, far longer than many shrubs manage.
-
Small enough for anywhere. At about 50cm in height and width, it suits pots, balconies and narrow borders where larger paws would crowd.
-
Built for wildlife. It is good for attracting native birds and other wildlife, and it blends well beside banksia, grevillea and other natives.
-
Coastal spray is fine. It stands up to salt-laden air, so it is a sensible choice near the sea.
Where it works best
Balconies and patios. A 30cm pot of free draining native potting mix on a sunny balcony or patio suits it well, as long as air moves around the plant.
Front of borders. Plant 50cm apart in a row or small drift along a sunny edge. The orange blooms look best against green and grey-green native foliage.
Native and wildlife beds. Mix it with banksia and grevillea for a planting that works for birds and for colour.
Growing Bush Glow Kangaroo Paw in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun in a frost-free spot with plenty of air movement. It suits Mediterranean, warm temperate and dry inland gardens best. In humid or frosty districts, a pot lets you control drainage and shelter the plant when the weather turns. It will stand up to coastal spray.
Soil. Light, free draining soil. Add coarse sand or plant on a mound if your soil is heavy, and use a native potting mix for containers.
Water and feed. Keep the soil moist while the plant settles in, then water deeply in dry spells and let the surface dry between waterings. Feed in spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.
Pruning. Remove the first flower spike to help stimulate new buds. Then cut spent flowers and dead foliage regularly, and the plant will keep rewarding you with fresh blooms.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Bush Glow Kangaroo Paw as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Our grower supplies the tube stock and it is not always available. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none just now, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Expect a small, leafy young clump. Plant it at the same depth as the tube or pot, in full sun, and water it in well.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why should I remove the first flower spike?
It seems odd, but removing the first spike helps stimulate new flower buds. The plant then builds a fuller display over the season.
Will it handle coastal spray?
Yes. It stands up to salt-laden air, though it still needs very free draining soil and full sun to stay healthy.
Does it suit a balcony?
It does. It is compact, flowers for months and grows well in a pot, so a sunny balcony with some air movement is a good home.
