Blutopia Bacopa (Sutera cordata 'Blutopia') is a fast-growing, mounding, trailing perennial that stays about 10cm high and spreads up to 1m wide. From summer to autumn it carries masses of small pale purple flowers, larger than on most bacopas. It is the plant for hanging baskets, windowboxes and patio pots, and it also works as a groundcover.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers for months. Every stem is covered in little lilac blossoms right through the warmer months, from summer to autumn.
-
Larger blooms than usual. The flowers are bigger than on most bacopas, which gives a fuller show.
-
Fast to spread. It looks modest when planted, then cascades over the rim of a pot or basket in no time.
-
Versatile. It works in hanging baskets, windowboxes, patio pots and as a groundcover.
-
Sun or part shade. Flexible about light, it suits most spots on a patio or balcony.
Where it works best
Hanging baskets and windowboxes. Plant two to a 300mm basket and let the stems tumble. It also teams well with upright flowers in mixed containers.
Patio pots. A pot by the back door gives months of colour and spills over the edge. Check pots daily in hot weather.
Groundcover. Plant 40cm apart on a sunny bank or the front of a bed, where it spreads to about 1m wide and carries its pale purple flowers over the summer.
Growing Blutopia Bacopa in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens through the warmer months. It is frost tender: bring it indoors when temperatures drop into single digits, and treat it as a warm-season plant in cooler southern regions.
Soil. Plant in well-draining soil or a quality potting mix. Free drainage is important in baskets and pots.
Water and feed. Provide plenty of water during the first 12 weeks or until the plant is established, and regularly in dry periods. Feed with a liquid fertiliser monthly during spring and summer for lush coverage and continued flowering.
Pruning. Clip it over in autumn to refresh it for next year. Lightly trim straggly stems at any time to encourage new growth.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Blutopia Bacopa as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It may not look like much when you plant it out, but it soon starts to trail and flower in warm weather. Plant it into a pot or a basket soon after it arrives and keep the water up.
Availability of the tube depends on our grower, and it is not always in stock. When the page shows it as sold out, use the notify button and we will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
