Anvi Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus 'Anvi') is a compact, evergreen hedging shrub that stays at 1.5m to 2m tall and wide, so it makes a full privacy hedge without constant clipping. Pink buds appear in late winter and open to pure white, scented flowers in spring, followed by metallic dark blue berries. It is more cold tolerant than the species form and is sometimes sold under the name 'Spirit'.
Why you'll love it
-
A shorter viburnum. If you love tinus but do not want to keep clipping it back to head height, Anvi is the solution.
-
Winter and spring interest. Pink buds in late winter open to scented white flowers, then metallic blue berries.
-
Seriously cold hardy. Mature woody stems survive temperatures down to -10°C or more.
-
Adaptable. It grows in sun or part shade, in cold or heat, and in sand, loam or clay.
-
Quick to establish. It settles into new gardens quickly, and its soft, slightly fuzzy foliage stays a rich green all year.
Where it works best
Low hedging. Plant 1m apart in a single row for a dense evergreen hedge at 1.5m to 2m, with little clipping.
Borders. Use it as a backbone shrub in formal or cottage garden borders.
Pots. It suits large containers, where its compact size and evergreen leaves hold up year round.
Privacy screens. It gives evergreen privacy at head height without the bulk of taller hedging plants.
Growing Anvi Laurustinus in Australia
Position and climate. Sunny to part shade. It suits most temperate and subtropical climates of Australia and tolerates frost once established. After a hard frost, prune off any leaf burn.
Soil. Most good garden soils. It copes with sand, loam and clay.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well while it establishes, and apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Prune regularly to promote new growth and encourage a compact, bushy habit. After frost, trim off any burnt leaves. The berries are ornamental and not for eating.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Anvi Laurustinus as tube stock, in 200mm pots in packs of 6 and in single 300mm pots. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly and is the economical choice for a long hedge. The 200mm and 300mm plants are larger and give a hedge line more presence in its first year.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?
Plant 1m apart in a single row. That spacing closes up into a dense hedge without crowding the bases.
How cold can it get?
Mature woody stems can survive temperatures down to -10°C or more. Leaves may burn after frost, and a light prune removes the damage.
Is it the same as 'Spirit'?
Anvi is sometimes sold as 'Spirit', so you may see both names for the same compact laurustinus.
