Dipladenia and Mandevilla
Dipladenia and mandevilla are the easiest way to get months of colour on a balcony or patio. From spring until the cool of late autumn they carry large trumpet flowers in red, hot pink, soft pink or white against glossy dark leaves. Dipladenias are bushy and compact, ideal for pots and baskets; mandevillas climb higher on a trellis or post. Both love heat and need very little care. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a dipladenia or mandevilla
The names overlap, since dipladenia is a group within Mandevilla, but the habit differs. For pots and baskets, the bushy types stay around 1.2m to 1.5m with support and far less without: Dipladenia Hot Pink and Dipladenia Pink flower non stop, and Red Brazilian Jasmine gives a true red. For height, Aloha White mandevilla twines to about 3m with large white trumpets, and My Fair Lady climbs to 2.5m with white flowers flushed pink. Merlin's Magic and Pink Dipladenia are soft pinks with a deeper throat.
Where they work
These are warm climate plants. They thrive in full sun to part shade through the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones, and on sheltered patios further south. They are frost tender: in cold districts grow them in pots and move them under cover in winter. Use them in tubs with an obelisk, in hanging baskets, on balcony railings or up a courtyard post. They are among the best plants for balconies and sit with our other climbers.
Planting and spacing
One plant fills a 30cm pot. Use a free draining potting mix and add a frame or three stakes for the climbers. In the ground, plant 60cm to 1m apart at the base of wire or lattice, in soil that drains well.
Care basics
Let the top of the mix dry between waterings: these plants store water in thick roots and dislike being wet all the time. Feed every two to three weeks in the growing season with a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants. No deadheading is needed. Trim lightly in early spring to shape. More easy colour for containers is in plants for pots.
Common questions
What is the difference between dipladenia and mandevilla?
They are closely related. Dipladenias are bushier with smaller leaves and suit pots and baskets; mandevillas climb taller and have larger leaves.
How long do they flower?
From spring until late autumn, and for most of the year in frost free warm climates.
Do they need full sun?
They flower best with at least half a day of sun. In very hot inland areas give them afternoon shade.
Will they survive winter?
In frost free areas they are evergreen. Where frost occurs, move pots under cover and keep them on the dry side until spring.
