Summerstar Pink Mandevilla (Mandevilla 'Summerstar Pink') is a fast growing twining climber, often sold as dipladenia, that reaches 2m to 3m and carries large, deep pink trumpet flowers with a soft yellow centre from late spring to autumn. It starts flowering while still very young and keeps going all summer, which makes it one of the most generous flowering climbers for a sunny wall, trellis or balcony.
Why you'll love it
-
Months of flowers. Deep pink trumpets open from late spring right through to autumn, with blooms all the way up the stems.
-
Flowers from a young age. Mandevillas begin blooming at tubestock size, so you get colour in the first season.
-
Fast growth. It puts on plenty of growth in the warmer months and covers a trellis quickly.
-
Easy to look after. A sunny spot, a trellis and regular water through summer are about all it asks.
-
A lot of colour in a small space. A compact twining habit suits balconies, courtyards and large pots as well as garden walls.
Where it works best
Privacy screens. Plant 1m apart along a trellis or wire frame, and train the stems across it. In warm climates it builds a flowering screen quickly.
Arbours and wall climbing. Give it a trellis, wires or an arbour to twine on. It wraps itself around supports as it grows.
Balconies and pots. Train it over a trellis on a sunny balcony, in a large pot of quality potting mix. In cooler areas, a pot lets you move it to shelter in winter.
Growing Summerstar Pink Mandevilla in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. Mandevilla prefers warmth, so it thrives in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. It is frost tender, so in cooler areas grow it in a pot on a sunny balcony or against a warm wall, and move it under cover in winter.
Soil. Well drained soil, with compost dug in at planting. In a pot, use a quality potting mix and a container with good drainage.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until it is established, usually around 12 weeks, and give it plenty of water in the heat of summer. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Prune as required to maintain its form and keep it within its trellis. Wear gloves when you work on it, because the milky sap can irritate skin.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Summerstar Pink Mandevilla as tube stock only: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tube stock arrives as a small twining plant, and because it flowers young, you will often see blooms in the first summer. Plant it where it can climb immediately, and water in well. Wait until the cold has passed before planting in cooler regions.
Our tube stock is grown for us and is not always on the shelf. A tube marked sold out means the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page will email you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How do I train it?
Give it a trellis, wires or a post to twine around. The shoots wrap themselves around the support, and you tie in any that stray. Regular pruning keeps it within its frame.
Can I grow it in a cooler climate?
In a pot, yes. It is frost tender and prefers warmth, so grow it on a sunny balcony or against a warm wall and bring it under cover for winter.
Is it safe around pets and children?
We do not list it as pet safe. The milky sap of mandevilla can irritate skin and is not for eating, so keep it away from animals and children that chew plants.
