Jade Red Dipladenia (Mandevilla sanderi 'Jade Red') is a fast growing, dwarf shrubby vine that stays about 20 to 30cm tall and wide, carrying large, trumpet shaped, dark red flowers from late spring to autumn. Its small, deep green leaves and compact habit are made for pots, balconies and patios. It gives you the colour of a climber in a size that fits where space is tight.
Why you'll love it
-
Deep red trumpets. Large dark red flowers open from late spring to autumn, so the colour lasts across the warm months.
-
Compact by nature. At 20 to 30cm it fits patio pots and balcony planters without taking over the space.
-
Fast growing. It grows quickly in warm weather, so a young plant soon fills its pot.
-
Neat deep green leaves. The small, dark leaves set off the red flowers and keep the plant tidy.
-
Warm climate performer. It prefers warm climates but survives to 3°C, so it suits a wide range of gardens with protection.
Where it works best
Patio pots. Plant one to a pot in a free draining mix, or group several pots for a block of red on a sunny deck.
Balconies. The compact size suits apartment balconies, where space is limited and a showy plant earns its place.
Flowerbeds. Plant 40cm apart at the front of a sunny bed, where the red trumpets stand out against greenery.
Growing Jade Red Dipladenia in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It prefers warm climates, so it suits tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens, and it survives to 3°C. In cooler districts grow it in a pot and move it under cover for winter.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil, or use a quality potting mix in containers.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks. Provide plenty of water through the heat of summer, and apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Prune as required to maintain its form. Wear gloves, because the milky sap can irritate skin, and keep the plant away from pets and children who might chew it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Jade Red Dipladenia as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly in a warm, sunny spot. Expect a small plant at first, which grows fast as the weather warms and soon fills out its pot.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How big does it get?
Around 20 to 30cm tall and wide. That makes it a pot and balcony plant, not a plant for covering a wall or a fence.
Will it survive winter?
It survives to 3°C, but frost will damage it. In cooler districts grow it in a pot and shelter it under cover through winter.
Is it safe around pets?
Treat it with caution. Like others in its family it has a milky sap that can irritate skin and mouths, so wear gloves when pruning and keep it from chewing pets.
