Cyclamen

Cyclamen carry the garden through the cool months. From autumn to spring they hold upswept flowers in red, pink, white, purple and bicolours above marbled heart shaped leaves, and a single plant can flower for four months or more. They are at home in a pot on a sheltered patio, a bright windowsill or a shaded bed. This range covers mini and full size series, frilled forms and mixed colours. Every plant is delivered Australia wide.

How to choose a cyclamen

All of these are selections of the florist's cyclamen, Cyclamen persicum, bred for long flowering in pots. Size and flower form are what separate them. The Metis and Midi types are compact, around 20cm, and suit small pots, bowls and mass colour: start with the Metis mix if you want a spread of colours. The Halios and Latinia series are larger plants near 30cm with bigger flowers, and the Curly forms have ruffled petal edges. Metis Pom Pom and Bisous are for anyone who wants something different on the table.

Where cyclamen work

Cyclamen like it cool and bright. Outdoors they suit pots on a covered patio, window boxes and shaded beds from autumn to spring across southern and temperate Australia. Indoors, give them the brightest spot out of direct afternoon sun and keep them away from heaters: a warm stuffy room shortens the display. In the subtropics treat them as cool season colour. They are a natural fit for plants for pots and sit with our indoor flowering plants.

Planting and spacing

In pots, use a free draining potting mix and keep the top of the tuber at or just above the surface, never buried. In a bed, space plants 20cm to 25cm apart in dappled shade with good drainage. One plant fills a 15cm pot, and three make a full bowl.

Care basics

Water when the top of the mix feels dry, and water at the edge of the pot or from below rather than into the centre of the plant, which can rot the tuber. Remove finished flowers and yellow leaves by twisting the stem and pulling it cleanly from the base. Feed every two weeks with a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants while it is in bloom. After flowering the plant rests through summer: keep it dry and shaded, and start watering again in autumn.

Common questions

How long do cyclamen flower?

In a cool, bright position a cyclamen flowers for three to four months, and often longer if spent flowers are removed.

Can cyclamen grow outside?

Yes. In temperate and cool climates they do well outdoors in pots or shaded beds through autumn, winter and spring.

Why are my cyclamen leaves turning yellow?

Usually the plant is too warm or too wet. Move it somewhere cooler and let the mix dry a little between waterings. In late spring, yellowing is the plant going dormant.

Will a cyclamen flower again next year?

It can. Let it rest dry over summer, then repot and resume watering in autumn when new leaves appear.
