Zebrina Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum 'Zebrina') has long, arching leaves striped in green and silvery white that spill out from a central crown. It grows up to 60cm tall and wide, sends out dangling baby plants, and suits hanging baskets, shelves and shaded garden beds. Like other spider plants, it is generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Why you'll love it
-
Striped leaves. Green blades striped with silvery white add a cool, bright note to a shady corner.
-
Quick to grow. It is a tough, fast growing plant, so it fills out a basket or a border soon after planting.
-
Baby plants on stems. Small offshoots, or pups, hang from the arching stems and can be propagated into new plants.
-
Gentle around pets. Spider plants are generally regarded as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
-
Movement and softness. The arching leaves and dangling pups bring a relaxed, flowing shape to rooms and patios.
Where it works best
Hanging baskets and pots. The arching leaves are at their best where they can spill down, so hang it at head height or set the pot on a plant stand.
Indoor rooms. Use it on a shelf, a sideboard or a window ledge in bright, indirect light, away from harsh afternoon sun.
Shaded tropical beds and borders. Plant 40cm apart as underplanting beneath larger shrubs. It also fills in as seasonal bedding colour in the warmer months.
Growing Zebrina Spider Plant in Australia
Position and climate. Bright, indirect light suits it best. It tolerates shade, though growth slows and the leaf colour weakens, and direct sun can scorch the leaf tips. It is not frost tolerant, so grow it outdoors only in frost free gardens and indoors elsewhere.
Soil. A free-draining potting mix, or garden soil enriched with compost where planted in a shaded bed.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the growing season and reduce watering in winter. If the pot dries out completely or stays soggy, the tips brown first.
Pruning. Repot any plantlets to produce new plants and trim off brown leaves. A cool shower now and then keeps the foliage clean.
What to expect when it arrives
Zebrina Spider Plant is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small and, as a quick grower, it fills a pot in a season. Pot it into a quality mix and place it in bright, indirect light.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
