Yami Red Arrowhead Plant (Syngonium podophyllum 'Yami Red') is a neat, compact arrowhead vine growing to about 50cm high and wide. The small green arrow shaped leaves are splashed creamy white, and on mature leaves a pinky red vein runs down the centre. It is a small plant with plenty of detail, made for tabletop display.
Why you'll love it
-
A pink rib on every leaf. On mature leaves a pinky red vein runs down the centre, which picks out the creamy splashes around it.
-
Creamy white splashes. Small green leaves are splashed with cream, giving the plant a light, fresh look.
-
Neat and compact. It grows to about 50cm high and wide at most, and holds its shape on a table or shelf.
-
Small leaves, fine detail. The leaves are smaller than on many syngoniums, so the pink and cream markings read as delicate rather than bold.
-
Easy care. Humid shade, indirect light and a steady watering routine are enough.
Where it works best
Tabletop display. Its compact size and fine markings reward close viewing on a table, desk or windowsill out of direct sun.
Shelves and hanging pots. As the vine lengthens it will drape over the edge of a pot, which softens a shelf line.
Shaded garden beds. In frost free gardens plant 40cm apart in a humid, sheltered position beneath taller plants.
Growing Yami Red Arrowhead Plant in Australia
Position and climate. A humid, shady position with indirect light suits it best. Bright indirect light keeps the pink rib clear, and direct sun scorches the cream areas. It is frost tender, so grow it outdoors only in tropical and subtropical gardens, and indoors in cooler climates.
Soil. Free draining soil or a good quality potting mix. Use a pot with drainage holes, so water never pools around the roots.
Water and feed. Water regularly during the first 12 weeks, then only if the soil seems dry. Feed using a liquid fertiliser at half rate every few weeks as the plant establishes, then occasionally. Because it likes humidity, regular water and a spritz on the foliage keep indoor plants happy.
Pruning. Remove old leaves for a quick tidy up, and trim any stem that grows longer than you would like. Syngonium is mildly toxic if chewed and the sap can irritate skin, so wash your hands after handling it and keep it away from pets and small children.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Yami Red as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, and the pink vein shows more clearly as leaves mature, so pot it up and keep it in bright, indirect light.
The tube is supplied by our grower, so it is not always in stock. While there is none it shows as sold out, and pressing the notify button on this page sends you an email the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is Yami Red a trailing plant?
It is a compact arrowhead vine, neat enough for a tabletop. As stems lengthen they will drape a little over a pot edge, but it stays much smaller than the large trailing syngoniums.
When does the pink vein appear?
On mature leaves. Young leaves are mostly green and cream, and the pinky red rib becomes clearer as they age.
Is it a pet friendly plant?
No. Syngonium is mildly toxic if chewed and the sap can irritate skin, so wash your hands after handling it and keep it away from pets and small children.
