Wide Zebra Haworthia (Haworthia 'Wide Zebra') is a small clumping succulent that earns its place on a desk, a shelf or a bright windowsill. Each rosette reaches about 15cm high and 15cm wide, with dark bronze-green leaves marked in crisp white, and the clump slowly spreads sideways as it makes pups. It prefers bright, filtered light to blazing sun, which makes it an easy houseplant.
Why you'll love it
-
Markings that stand out. Dark bronze-green leaves spotted and banded in white give even a 15cm rosette real contrast.
-
Easy indoors. It is happiest in a well lit room out of hot direct sun, where many succulents sulk.
-
Very little water. A drink once a week through the warmer months is plenty, and it needs less again when the weather cools.
-
It multiplies. The clump produces pups, so one plant becomes several to repot, swap or give away.
-
Pet friendly. Haworthia is not considered toxic to cats or dogs, so it can sit on a low shelf.
Where it works best
Desks, shelves and windowsills. A rosette this size sits happily in a small pot. Group three or four in a shallow bowl for a tidy display that needs no pruning.
Rockeries and waterwise gardens in dry regions. Outside, tuck it into rockery pockets on the shadier side of the rocks, in gardens that stay frost free. Plant 20cm apart so the clumps have room to spread sideways.
Pots on a covered patio. Under cover, with the rain kept off the crown, it can live outdoors through the mild months and come inside for winter.
Growing Wide Zebra Haworthia in Australia
Position and climate. Bright, filtered light is ideal. It likes a little more shade than most succulents, so keep it out of hot afternoon sun. Indoors, any well lit spot suits it. Outdoors it belongs in dry gardens without frost; elsewhere, grow it in a pot and bring it in when cold nights arrive.
Soil. Free draining soil or a cactus and succulent mix, in a pot or in the ground. Keep the crown of the plant above the soil surface, because a crown buried in damp soil rots.
Water and feed. Water weekly through the warmer months and let the mix dry out between drinks. Cut back in the cool. In spring, an organic liquid feed mixed at half strength is all it needs.
Pruning. No pruning is needed. When pups crowd the pot, lift the young plants away and repot them, or share them with friends.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Wide Zebra Haworthia as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It is a slow, tidy grower, so a tube plant is small on arrival and takes a season or two to fill a pot. Pot it into free draining mix soon after it arrives.
Our grower supplies the tube stock and does not always have it. If the grower has none, the tube reads as sold out here, and the notify button on this page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Can Wide Zebra Haworthia live outdoors?
Yes, in a dry garden or covered pot where frost does not reach. Give it filtered light and keep rain off the crown.
How often should I water it?
About once a week in the warmer months, letting the mix dry between drinks. Soft, mushy leaves usually mean too much water.
What do I do when it makes pups?
Leave them while the pot has room. When it gets crowded, lift the young plants away and repot them in free draining mix.
