The Walnut Whiskey Barrel is a barrel style planter moulded from high density resin, with the staved body and two banded hoops of a coopered barrel and none of the weight. It is made in four sizes, from 330mm across holding 14 to 16 litres up to 570mm across holding 60 to 65 litres, in a walnut or an oak finish. If you like the look of a half barrel but not timber that rots at the base, this is the substitute.

  • 330mm across, 20cm high, about 14 to 16 litres. Flowers, a herb collection, compact foliage plants.
  • 390mm across, 23cm high, about 22 to 25 litres. Flowering plants and smaller shrubs.
  • 520mm across, 31cm high, about 45 to 50 litres. Feature plants, established shrubs, or a dwarf fruit tree.
  • 570mm across, 34cm high, about 60 to 65 litres. Large feature planting, where one pot holds a courtyard corner on its own.

These are wide rather than deep, so they favour spreading roots.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. High density resin in a walnut whiskey barrel look. It is not real wood, so no oiling or sealing. Wipe it clean or rinse it off.

Outdoors. Suited to gardens, lawns, patios, courtyards and alfresco areas, and the light weight makes it one of the few large planters practical on a balcony.

Drainage. A drainage hole is built in, which keeps the mix from turning sour after heavy rain. No saucer is included, so put something underneath on a surface you care about.
