Twister Haworthia (Haworthia 'Twister') is an easy care succulent with dark bronze-green leaves, spotted with white, that spiral up the stem in tiered layers. It grows to about 30cm tall and 50cm wide and sends up pink flowers when it is content. Happy by the pool, on the deck or beside the front door, it asks only for sunshine and free-draining soil.
Why you'll love it
-
A corkscrew of leaves. The leaves spiral in tiers, which gives the plant a sculptural shape from every angle.
-
Happy in sunshine. It does well in bright sun, which suits decks, entrances and poolside pots where many foliage plants struggle.
-
Waterwise. It needs little water, so it copes with the odd missed week.
-
Pink flowers. A well placed plant sends up pink flowers over the foliage.
-
Safe around pets. Haworthia is not considered toxic to cats and dogs.
Where it works best
Poolside and decks. A pot of Twister beside a pool or on a sunny deck sits well among paving and timber. It drops little litter, so it will not clog the pool.
Front doors and entrances. Pair two matching pots either side of the door. Free-draining mix and a drainage hole keep them in good shape.
Waterwise beds. Plant 40cm apart in a free-draining garden bed among gravel and other dry climate plants, in a frost-free spot.
Growing Twister Haworthia in Australia
Position and climate. Sunshine suits it best, and part shade is also fine. Protect it from frost. Outdoors it suits frost-free subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean gardens, and in colder places it is better in a pot you can bring inside.
Soil. Free-draining soil, in pots or in the ground, with the crown kept above the soil surface.
Water and feed. Haworthias need little water. Weekly watering in the warmer months keeps plants looking lush. Fertilise in spring with an organic liquid feed mixed at half rate.
Pruning. None is needed. If pots become crowded as pups develop, lift the young plants and re-pot them or share them with friends.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Twister Haworthia as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, so pot it into a free-draining mix with a drainage hole and give it a bright spot while the roots fill the pot.
Tube stock comes from our grower and supply is not always available. When the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Does Twister need full sun?
It is happiest in sunshine, but part shade is fine too. Just keep the position bright and the soil free-draining.
Will it suit a pot by the pool?
Yes. It likes sun, needs little water, and drops very little litter, so it is a neat choice for poolside pots.
How big does it get?
Up to about 30cm tall and 50cm wide, so allow room for it to clump up over time.
