Super White Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum 'Super White') is a compact foliage plant, 30cm to 60cm tall and wide, whose leaves are almost entirely white with a narrow green rim. It adds light to a shady border, an interior scheme or an office desk. It needs warmth, above 15C, and humid air.
Why you'll love it
-
Almost pure white leaves. A narrow green rim frames each white leaf, which brightens dark corners better than most flowers.
-
A compact habit. Staying between 30cm and 60cm it suits desks, shelves and the front of a shady bed.
-
Easy to pair. White and green goes with any pot colour or interior scheme.
-
Shade friendly. It grows in the dappled shade of tropical forest, so indirect light is exactly right.
-
Little pruning. Apart from removing old leaves, it needs no cutting back.
Where it works best
Bright, humid rooms. A well lit bathroom or kitchen suits it, because it prefers humid air. Keep it out of direct sun.
Tropical garden borders. In a warm, frost free, shady garden, plant 40cm apart in a group to light up the bed.
Containers. A glazed pot on a shaded patio or a desk in a well lit office shows the leaf colour at its best.
Growing Super White Chinese Evergreen in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a shady spot with indirect sunlight, indoors or in a tropical garden. Temperatures must stay above 15C. With so little green in the leaf, it grows slowly and burns easily, so keep it out of direct sun.
Soil. A good quality potting mix is best, and humid air helps the leaves stay crisp. Use a pot with drainage holes.
Water and feed. Keep the soil evenly moist for the first 12 weeks, then water only when it seems dry. Give it a slow release fertiliser once a year and a liquid feed every three months.
Pruning. It needs no pruning, only the removal of tired leaves. The sap is a skin irritant, so wash your hands after handling it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Super White Chinese Evergreen as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small and grows slowly, so choose it for its colour rather than for fast volume. Pot it into a good potting mix and give it a bright, warm spot out of the sun.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why does it want humid air?
It comes from shady tropical forest. Humid air keeps the leaves crisp, which is why a bathroom or kitchen with good light suits it.
What temperature does it need?
Above 15C. It is only for tropical or warm subtropical gardens outdoors, and indoors elsewhere.
Is it toxic to pets?
Yes. The sap is irritating and the plant is toxic if eaten, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.
