Success Red Anthurium (Anthurium andreanum 'Success Red') carries large heart shaped scarlet flowers with yellow spikes above deep green evergreen leaves. It grows 60 to 80cm tall and about 60cm wide, and its flowers sit straight and upright, clear of the foliage. It is a neat sized plant for indoor rooms and shaded tropical borders.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers that stand clear. Blooms rise upright above the leaves, so they are easy to see and never hidden in the foliage.
-
Colour that develops. The flowers start green in the bud and turn deep red as they mature, so a plant often carries several stages at once.
-
Evergreen heart shaped leaves. The deep green foliage looks tidy in every season.
-
Vase life of three weeks. Anthuriums are known as flamingo flowers, and their cut flowers last around three weeks in water.
-
Neat and compact. At 60 to 80cm it suits indoor pots and tropical garden beds without sprawling.
Where it works best
Shaded tropical borders. Plant 50cm apart in a frost free garden beneath taller plants. The scarlet flowers glow in the shade.
Indoor displays. Bright rooms with filtered light suit it. Use a pot with drainage holes, and keep it away from direct sun and air conditioning.
Cutting. Grow a few plants in pots on a shaded patio and cut stems for the house through the flowering seasons.
Growing Success Red Anthurium in Australia
Position and climate. A sheltered position with plenty of bright, filtered light gives the longest flowering. Avoid direct sun. It needs warmth and humidity and must be protected from frost, so outdoors it belongs in tropical and frost free subtropical gardens.
Soil. Free draining, organic rich soil or a quality potting mix. Mulch outdoor plantings to keep moisture even around the roots.
Water and feed. Water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, and keep the plant moist during dry periods. Apply slow release fertiliser in spring, then half strength liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks in the warmer months.
Pruning. Cut off finished flower stems and tired leaves at the base. Wipe the leaves of indoor plants with a damp cloth, and repot at the start of spring if the roots fill the pot.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Success Red Anthurium as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube. Anthuriums are slow growing when young and come from tissue culture, so this one arrives small and builds up its leaves before it flowers. The tube is supplied by our grower and is not on offer every week. A sold out tube means the grower has none at present, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants travel upright and snug. Pot up promptly and give them a warm, shaded, humid spot to settle.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Why are the new flowers green?
That is how Success Red develops. The flowers start green in bud and turn deep red as they mature, so green buds are a good sign.
Is it a good size for a small room?
Yes. At 60 to 80cm tall and about 60cm wide it fits a corner or a side table without dominating, which is why it is a neat sized plant.
Is it poisonous?
Yes. The leaves contain a poisonous substance, so keep it away from children and pets, and avoid skin contact with the sap.
