Snowflake Honey Myrtle (Melaleuca linariifolia 'Snowflake') is a compact native shrub about 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide, covered from early summer to autumn in clusters of small, fluffy, cream-white flowers over fine foliage. It can be shaped into a formal low hedge or left to grow naturally in a cottage border, and birds flock to the nectar.
Why you'll love it
-
Months of lacy white flowers. Fluffy cream-white clusters open from early summer through to autumn.
-
Birds and wildlife. The nectar rich flowers draw birds and other native wildlife.
-
Shapes how you like. Clip it formally or leave it to grow naturally for a rustic look.
-
Handles wet soil and frost. It will even put up with occasional wet feet, and it is frost tolerant.
-
Compact size. At about 1.5m by 1.5m it fits hedges, borders and mid-sized beds without overwhelming them.
Where it works best
Low hedges. Plant 1m apart in a single row for a low hedge that knits together as it grows, and clip after flowering.
Waterways and damp spots. It tolerates temporary wet soil, so it is a good choice beside creeks, drains and low areas that collect water.
Cottage borders and native gardens. Left unclipped it makes a soft, rustic shrub that suits mixed borders and native beds.
Growing Snowflake Honey Myrtle in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun encourages flowering. It is frost tolerant, so it suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean climates.
Soil. Most soil types and planting conditions. It will tolerate temporary wet soil, and occasional wet feet do not trouble it.
Water and feed. Mulch and water well, especially while it establishes. It has no special feeding needs beyond a light spring feed if growth is slow.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to encourage a compact habit. For a formal hedge, clip lightly after each flush of flowers.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Snowflake Honey Myrtle as tube stock only: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. For a long hedge a tube is the economical choice. Plant out soon after arrival, water in well, and mulch.
Tube stock is supplied by our grower, and supply comes and goes. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none today, so press the notify button on the page and we will email you the day it is back.

Common questions
How tall will it grow?
About 1.5m, though height depends on conditions and it can run slightly taller in rich soil. A light prune after flowering holds it where you want it.
Will it cope with wet soil?
Yes, it tolerates temporary wet soil and occasional wet feet, which is why it suits low spots and waterways. It does not want to stand in water permanently.
When should I prune it?
Straight after flowering. Pruning then encourages a compact habit and sets up next season's flowers.
