Silver Baby Agapanthus (Agapanthus orientalis 'Silver Baby') is a compact agapanthus, about 50cm tall and 60cm wide, with a long flowering season of ice-white blooms lightly tipped in pale blue. The florets have slightly ruffled petals in bud, and the neat size lets you enjoy them up close. It is frost, humidity and drought tolerant once established.
Why you'll love it
-
A long flowering season. Ice-white heads, tipped in pale blue, keep opening over a long stretch of summer.
-
Neat but generous. A compact clump that still produces plenty of flowers, so it suits tight spaces without looking shy.
-
Tough once established. It tolerates frost, humidity and drought, a useful combination for a flowering border plant.
-
Made for containers. Close to a seat or a doorway, you can see the ruffled buds and the delicate blue tips.
-
Low maintenance. It is hardy, and only needs deadheading and the occasional division.
Where it works best
Borders and path edges. Plant 50cm apart in a line, and the clumps merge into a soft white ribbon of flowers.
Containers. A pot by the front door shows off the flowers at eye level and keeps the plant tidy.
Small gardens. At 50cm by 60cm it adds white colour without taking over, and it works well against dark foliage.
Growing Silver Baby Agapanthus in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. Agapanthus are tougher than they look, and Silver Baby suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate and Mediterranean gardens. It handles cold and dry conditions, though growth slows in them.
Soil. Any well drained soil that is not too rich in organic matter. Mulch at planting and feed lightly.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the first 12 weeks or so and keep it mulched. After that it asks for little water.
Pruning. Snip off spent flower heads to encourage more blooms through summer and to stop seed forming. When the clump outgrows its space, lift and divide it.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Silver Baby Agapanthus as tube stock, 140mm pots in packs of 10 and 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and it is the practical way to plant a long border. The potted packs carry a fuller clump from the start, so they should reach flowering sooner. Plant in a prepared bed and keep the water up in the first season.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
