Princess Amalia Elegance Anthurium (Anthurium andreanum 'Princess Amalia Elegance') is the romantic anthurium, with lipstick pink spathes shaded from tip to centre and matching pink spikes above glossy heart shaped leaves. It grows 60 to 80cm tall and about 60cm wide, and blooms in spring and autumn. It works as a shade loving plant in subtropical gardens and as a classic houseplant elsewhere.
Why you'll love it
-
Shaded pink flowers. The colour deepens from the tip to the centre of each spathe, and the spike matches, so the bloom looks hand painted.
-
Flowers that evolve. As each flower ages it develops green tones through the pink, so a single plant carries several shades at once.
-
Spring and autumn blooms. Two flushes a year, and each flower lasts well on the plant.
-
Long lasting cut flowers. Anthuriums have a vase life of around three weeks, which makes this a lovely plant to cut from.
-
Shade and indoor friendly. It blooms in bright filtered light, so it fits shaded garden corners and indoor rooms.
Where it works best
Shaded tropical and subtropical borders. Plant 50cm apart beneath trees or tall shrubs in a frost free garden. The pink flowers show up well against the dark green of the leaves.
Indoors. A bright room out of direct sun suits it, and it is a classic choice for a living room or entry. Use a pot with good drainage and a quality potting mix.
Growing Princess Amalia Elegance Anthurium in Australia
Position and climate. Choose a sheltered spot with bright, filtered light and no direct sun. It needs warmth and humidity and does not tolerate frost, so outdoors it suits the tropics and frost free subtropical gardens. In cooler parts of the country it is best kept indoors.
Soil. Free draining and rich in organic matter. In the garden, mulch around the plant so the soil does not dry out. In a pot, use a good potting mix.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks, and keep it moist through dry spells. Feed with slow release fertiliser in spring and half strength liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks in the warmer months.
Pruning. Cut off spent flower stems and tired leaves at the base. Repot container plants at the beginning of spring, and wipe indoor leaves with a damp cloth to refresh the shine.

If it shows as sold out, the grower has none right now: press the notify button on the page and we email you the day it returns.

Common questions
Why are my flowers turning green?
That is normal for this variety. The pink flowers develop green tones as they age, so a plant often shows several shades together. Healthy, glossy leaves are the real sign of good care.
Can I cut the flowers?
Yes. Anthuriums are popular cut flowers with a vase life of around three weeks. Cut a stem low down and keep the water clean.
Is it poisonous?
Yes. The leaves contain a poisonous substance and the sap can irritate skin. Keep it away from areas where children and pets play.
