Pink Dalmatian Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum 'Pink Dalmatian') is a compact, leafy foliage plant, 30cm to 60cm tall and wide, with deep green leaves splashed in pink. It is an easy houseplant and a handy shade plant for tropical gardens. It needs warmth above 15C, so for most of the country it is an indoor plant.
Why you'll love it
-
Pink splashes on deep green. The strong contrast keeps the leaves interesting at every distance, without a single flower.
-
Pairs well with a bright pot. Set it in a boldly coloured container and the pink splashes pick up the colour of the pot.
-
Compact and easy. It stays at 30cm to 60cm and is simple to grow, which makes it a good first houseplant.
-
Shade tolerant. Indirect light is enough, so it fills the shaded spots in a house or garden.
-
Low fuss. It needs no pruning, only the occasional removal of old leaves.
Where it works best
Indoor display. Stand it in a well lit room, out of direct sun, in a pot that adds colour to a plain corner.
Shaded patio containers. In warm regions, it brings a patch of pink to a covered verandah.
Tropical garden underplanting. Plant 40cm apart under larger plants in a frost free, shady bed, where it forms a speckled layer.
Growing Pink Dalmatian Chinese Evergreen in Australia
Position and climate. A shady spot with indirect light. Temperatures need to stay above 15C, so garden planting suits only tropical and warm subtropical areas, and in cold locations it is for indoor planting only.
Soil. A free draining soil or a good quality potting mix. Make sure pots have drainage so the roots do not sit wet.
Water and feed. Keep the soil regularly moist for the first 12 weeks, then water when it feels dry to the touch. Use a slow release fertiliser once a year, with a liquid feed every three months for rich foliage.
Pruning. Pruning is not needed. Take off old leaves to tidy it, then wash your hands because the sap can irritate skin.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pink Dalmatian Chinese Evergreen as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small and fills out gradually. Pot it into a container with drainage and keep it warm.
The tube is grown for us and is not in constant supply. It shows as sold out whenever our grower has none, and the notify button on the page sends you an email the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Can I grow it outdoors?
Only where it stays above 15C, which means tropical and warm subtropical gardens. In cold locations, grow it indoors.
How much light does it need?
Bright, indirect light. A well lit room out of direct sun, or a shaded patio in a warm region, keeps the leaves looking their best.
Is it safe for dogs and cats?
No. The sap is irritating and the plant is toxic if eaten, so keep it where pets cannot chew it.
