Peppermint Spice Coral Bells (Heuchera 'Peppermint Spice') is a mounding perennial about 20cm high and 30cm wide, with dark green, maple-shaped leaves shaded silvery grey in the centre and netted with dark veins. In mid-spring and summer, slender stems rise to 45cm carrying coral-pink bells. It is the understated heuchera, easy to place and quietly attractive.
Why you'll love it
-
Silver-grey shading. A subtle silvery overlay on each leaf, with a contrasting web of dark veins, gives a refined look without shouting.
-
Coral-pink flowers. Bright coral-pink bells appear on slender stems in mid-spring and summer, a pleasant surprise above the quiet foliage.
-
Maple-shaped leaves. The lobed leaves add a fine, detailed texture at the front of a bed.
-
Hardy and humidity tolerant. It is totally frost hardy and, once established, humidity tolerant.
-
Pet friendly. Coral bells are not considered toxic to cats or dogs.
Where it works best
Garden beds and borders. Plant 30cm apart in a tight row for a neat, low foliage border. The mounds touch at that spacing and the flowers rise above them.
Cottage and informal gardens. Its muted tones pair well with brighter perennials and with plants that have bolder flowers or leaves.
Underplanting and containers. Tuck it under shrubs and small trees, or grow a group in a pot on a balcony or courtyard.
Growing Peppermint Spice Coral Bells in Australia
Position and climate. Dappled or part shade through to full shade. It needs more watering in sun, and in warmer gardens through summer, to keep the leaves lush. It is totally frost hardy and humidity tolerant once established.
Soil. Moist, well-drained soil. Plant heucheras slightly proud of the soil, so that the centre of the plant sits above soil level and water runs away from the crown.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, and mulch again each spring.
Pruning. Cut back any dead or untidy foliage in spring to make room for new growth.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Peppermint Spice Coral Bells as tube stock (a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly) and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes are the economical way to plant a border, and the 140mm pots give a fuller clump for a container or a quick effect. Plants settle in within a few weeks of planting.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
