Lilly Pilly 'Resilience' (Syzygium australe 'Resilience') is the screening plant most Australian gardeners should start with. Left untrimmed it reaches about 5m tall and 3m wide, and it holds dense glossy foliage right down to ground level rather than going bare at the base. Unlike older lilly pillies it resists psyllid, so the bronze new growth stays clean without spraying. Planted a metre apart it closes into a solid green wall in two to three seasons.
Why you'll love it
Psyllid resistance you can see. Older lilly pillies pimple and pucker once psyllid finds the soft growth. This selection resists it: not immune, but no routine spraying.
Dense from the ground up. It branches low and holds foliage at the base, so there are no gaps at fence height.
You choose the height. About 5m left alone, or an easy 2m to 3m hedge with two trims a year.
Built for exposed sites. Salt tolerant, wind tolerant and comfortable in humidity, so coastal boundaries do not burn it.
Native, bird friendly, pet safe. White flowers, then edible pink berries the birds work through. Not toxic to cats or dogs.
Where it works best
Screening and hedging. Plant 1m apart in a single row. Tighter spacing does not close the gap faster, and makes watering and feeding harder.
Windbreaks and coastal gardens. A double staggered row at 1m spacing filters wind rather than blocking it, which is what an exposed block needs.
Feature planting. Single plants shape well, so larger sizes suit a clipped ball or a matched pair at an entry.
Growing Lilly Pilly 'Resilience' in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun gives the densest growth; part shade works but the screen stays looser. This is a plant for tropical, subtropical and warm temperate gardens. It takes light frost once established, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and hard frosting southern gardens want a sheltered warm wall or a hardier hedge.
Soil. Not fussy about type, but it wants drainage. On heavy clay, plant on a raised mound and work compost through the bed. Mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the stem.
Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first summer, then taper off. A controlled release native fertiliser in early spring and late summer keeps the colour up.
Pruning. Tip prune from planting, then trim after the spring flush and again in late summer. It reshoots from old wood, so a neglected hedge can be cut back hard.
What to expect when it arrives
It is grown in eleven sizes, from tube to 200L. Tube, 140mm and 200mm plants are young and single stemmed, and they are the value choice for a long boundary: a season slower to close, but quick to establish. The 250mm and 300mm pots are the usual middle ground, and the 400mm, 500mm and 25L to 200L sizes arrive already branched, carrying real height on day one.
Plants are packed to travel upright and delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Advanced and large stock is freighted at cost. Expect a quiet fortnight after planting, then new growth within four to six weeks in warm weather. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
One metre apart in a single row. At that spacing the canopies meet and the screen reads as solid within two to three seasons, with no thin patch along the bottom.
How fast does it grow?
In a warm garden with water and feed, up to about a metre of height a year once the roots are away. Slower in the first year, and in cooler southern gardens.
Can I keep it at 2m?
Yes. Two trims a year hold it at 2m to 3m, and because it shoots from old wood it stays furnished at the base instead of lifting into bare trunks.
Lilly Pilly Resilience reaches about 5m tall at maturity and about 3m wide.
Does Lilly Pilly Resilience need full sun or shade?
it grows best in full sun, partial shade.
How much water does Lilly Pilly Resilience need?
water needs are low, moderate.
How fast does Lilly Pilly Resilience grow?

Which Australian climates suit Lilly Pilly Resilience?

I purchased 32 Lilly Pilly Resilience to screen a fence on our new block. The plants arrived in excellent condition and are really vibrant. They have been planted in clay soil which has been improved with gypsum and organic matter. In this last few months they have grown about 200-250mm in height with vigarous growth all around. I am very happy with these plants and looking forward to choosing other varieties for our garden project.
Purchased four of the 100L Lilly Pilly Resilience trees to match my existing ones and they look excellent next to them and arrive in great condition. Very happy with the product, just need to work on delivery and communication.
Store owner replied:
Ned, the four 100L Resilience look excellent beside your existing ones, and thanks for the photos. Delivery windows on trees this size depend on what our growers and carriers can schedule. Anything still outstanding can go to sales@nurserynearme.com.au with your order number.

@ $799, my Resilience Hedge is worth $70,000🤩. We love the privacy it makes, right to the ground. Spray for the Japanese Green Beetle which can strip then in a few days. Better still encourage predators to eat the Beetle.
Store owner replied:
Love the photo, Karen. Privacy right down to the ground is what Resilience does best. Thanks for passing on your beetle tip too, and encouraging birds and other natural predators is a great way to keep pests in check.

Store owner replied:
Gorgeous is the word, Karen, and thanks for the photo. Happy to help with your next project, and with any family and friends you send our way.
Great company to deal with and excellent plants. The only thing that needs improving is the delivery process.
Store owner replied:
Troy, the plants look healthy and settled in your photo, which is what counts. Delivery timing depends on when our growers and carriers can line each order up, so feedback on that side is always useful.
Plants were delivered to incorrect location for two weeks and a lot of the lower branches were damaged when we finally received them.
Store owner replied:
Appreciate you sharing the photo, John. Every plant comes with our 30-day healthy plant guarantee, assessed from photos, so if the lower branches are still a concern, email a few pictures and your order number to sales@nurserynearme.com.au. Lilly pillies take pruning well, and cutting broken branches back to a healthy point encourages fresh shoots low down.

I couldn't be happier with the Lilly Pillies I purchased! They arrived in incredibly healthy condition and established themselves remarkably quickly in my garden. Within a short time, they had already shown impressive growth and are thriving beautifully. The best part is the instant privacy they provided. My shopping experience was so easy and delivery was super fast. I highly recommend Nursery Near Me.
Store owner replied:
That's a real transformation, Dan, and thanks for sharing so many photos. Those Resilience look right at home.

2nd time buying from Brisbane Plant Nursery. Quality stock and great communication. Out plants are settling in well and starting to flower. Pricing meant we could afford more mature plants and not have to wait as long for the privacy we needed
Brandon was excellent—very helpful and knowledgeable. He responded quickly to questions and fulfilled his promises. The driver was very strong and carried all eight trees up three flights of stairs to the backyard with a smile, making the entire process seamless.
We had an installer provide a quote for planting, and he measured the trees at 1.2 meters, which was shorter than the 1.4 to 1.7 meters I had expected. While I am still very happy with the health and fullness of the trees, I would have preferred to pay extra for taller ones, as we wanted to create an instant impact in preparing the property for sale.
So happy and impressed with the whole experience of dealing with Brisbane Plant Nursery. Really easy to use and navigate website, pricing is competitive, delivery was super fast, friendly and arrived when they said they would. What more could you want from an online nursery? Oh yeah, the plants were fantastic too! We ordered x8 resilience Lilly Pilly trees of 1.5-1.7m and that’s exactly what we got. They were all in wonderful condition, as described, and in easy to carry, fully recyclable bags. We have nothing but great things to say and will definitely be considering future purchases as our backyard grows.
Thank you for prompt delivery although the plants will need some tough love pruning…in order to fill out from ground up..with a it of TLC they will have a good chance.
I purchased four Lilly Pillies (1.4-1.8 m high) to establish my hedge as soon as possible. They look great planted along the fence line, and it won't be long until they provide good privacy. They were delivered in perfect condition and were a great price. Thank you 🙂
The Lilly Pillys I ordered were delivered exactly as described. The delivery service was exceptional with messages for delivery. Will definitely order again.
Great supplier. Healthy trees exactly as described. Very prompt communication. Helpful advice from both online sales and delivery staff. Punctual delivery. Very satisfied and highly recommended.
Very happy with the 8 x large Lilly Pilly Resilience we had delivered.
Prompt delivery & friendly staff.
We appreciated the free bag of fertiliser too.
I ordered 60 lilly pillys to create a border around the perimeter of my property. I was given free delivery and they were delivered the next day. The driver offered to carry them all to where they were going to be planted but I instructed him to just leave them out of the way here instead and let my landscaper move them later. Very happy with the trees!
Store owner replied:
Fast and healthy is just how we like it, Louise. Resilience was selected for its resistance to the psyllid that pimples the new leaves of many lilly pillies, so the fresh growth tends to stay clean.
Store owner replied:
Lovely to hear, Carol. Enjoy watching them knit together into a hedge.
Plants were received in good condition. Service from company well below par. Ordered 7x plants on 31/12/25 and received confirmation of payment email. Heard nothing about despatch or when trees would arrive. On 13/1/26 phoned 4 times and each time no answer. I left messages asking for a return call explaining I wanted to know where my plants were as this was well over the 5 day delivery promise. Next morning at 6.30am doorbell rang. Went to answer but no one there. Went outside to look around and the 7 plants were sitting on front lawn for anyone to take. Never received a call back, no one asked if plants were delivered and nothing regarding 5 day delivery promise. Pretty poor communication ,actually no communication! Be a little wary of this operation because they have no customer skills.
Store owner replied:
John, thanks for the detailed feedback, and good to hear the plants arrived in good condition. Delivery dates are estimates that depend on grower and carrier availability, and each order is set up to send a status email as it moves along. Support is handled by email and answered by real people, so if anything is still outstanding, please send your order number to sales@nurserynearme.com.au.
Amber
Easy to order on the website. Great prices with a sale on!
When the plants arrived they were very healthy and looked good and did the job.
The only issue I have is the communication. There is a phone number on the website that you can call if you have any queries and it always goes to voicemail and no one answers. I used the chat feature which you do get a delayed answer. I was starting to think that it was a scam because I had a number of missed deliveries and couldn't get hold of anyone but they did arrive.
Only suggestion would be to either man the phone line and be able to respond in a timely manner.
Store owner replied:
Glad the Resilience arrived healthy and did the job, Kristene. Our support runs by email, with every message answered by a real person, so sales@nurserynearme.com.au is the most reliable way to reach the team. Status emails also go out at every stage of an order.
Emily
Love it so far. Arrived ready to plant and it was well cushioned, and looks great on the patio. I will be back for more.
Most are in really good condition but I have a couple whose leaves are falling off and they are looking a bit naked. I think we are in the 30 day guarantee time period. Can I exercise this option with a couple please?
Store owner replied:
Hi Helen. Every plant we sell is covered by our 30-day healthy plant guarantee, and claims are assessed with photos, so please email sales@nurserynearme.com.au with your order number and a few pictures of the ones losing leaves. A bit of leaf drop after planting is often transplant stress, so keep the soil evenly moist while the roots settle.
Emily
Lilly Pilly trees are great, however delivery was not ideal as they did not ring our gate buzzer at all to let us know they were there and just left the trees on the nature strip.
Store owner replied:
Really pleased the trees themselves are great, Vicki, and thanks for letting us know how the drop-off went.
I was very happy with my purchase. The trees arrived in extremely good condition, and the staff were very helpful when I made changes to my order and even waived any additional costs for delivery even when I doubled my order! They were also willing to hold off on the delivery until I was ready, and then the delivery was super quick.
I've planted my hedges and can already see new growth! This is now my go-to nursery for any plants I need in the future.
10 out of 10!
Store owner replied:
Hayley, new growth this early is the best sign a hedge has settled in. Lovely to hear the team made your changes easy, and here's to whatever you plant next.
Cheers, Amber
My landscaper planted my plants and he commented what great quality the plants were. Very happy with the size and how healthy they were.
Some disappointment with the delay in delivery as we expected them sooner but will order again knowing they may take longer to arrive. .
Store owner replied:
Please pass our thanks on to your landscaper, Peter. That's high praise from someone who handles plants every day. Delivery dates are estimates that hinge on when our growers and carriers can fit each order in, so some take a little longer. We'd be glad to have you back.
Emily
Store owner replied:
Cheers Luke, glad it all turned up as advertised.
I always try to support local businesses, but for this particular project, my local nursery was charging triple the price. After a quick online search, I came across the Nursery Near Me website and found the exact same plant at a fraction of the cost.
Ordering plants online felt a little unusual, but the process turned out to be seamless. I was able to select the right plant in the size I needed with ease. The team was incredibly helpful via both the virtual chat and over the phone, assisting me in choosing the best plant type and size for my garden.
The plants arrived quickly, in excellent health, and just as pictured on their website. Highly recommend.
Store owner replied:
Samantha, picking the right plant and size is half the job, so we're glad the team could help you land on the Resilience. Even better that they arrived healthy and just as pictured.
Emily
