Lemonicious Lemon Tree

The Lemonicious Lemon Tree (Citrus limon 'Lemonicious') is a true dwarf lemon bred for pots, staying around 2m tall by 1.5m wide while producing full sized, juicy fruit. It gives balcony and courtyard gardeners the whole lemon tree experience, perfumed white blossom, glossy foliage and a steady supply of fruit, in a plant that never needs a backyard. In warm climates it flowers and fruits in overlapping waves for much of the year.

Growing the Lemonicious Lemon in Australia

Position and climate. Six or more hours of sun for real fruit. It handles heat and humidity well and takes light frost only, so in frost prone districts grow it in a pot you can shift under cover for winter, which is exactly what it was bred for.

Soil. Free draining and rich. In pots, premium citrus or all purpose mix; in ground, dig through compost and plant slightly proud on clay.

Water and feed. Citrus in pots are hungry and thirsty. Water deeply whenever the top few centimetres dry out, daily in summer heat, and feed with a citrus fertiliser in early spring, midsummer and early autumn. Inconsistent water is the usual cause of fruit drop.

Pruning. Minimal: remove any shoots from below the graft, tidy after harvest, and thin heavy fruit set on young trees so branches strengthen.

Common questions

How big are the lemons on a dwarf tree?

Full size. Dwarfing affects the tree, not the fruit, so you get normal juicy lemons on a plant a third the size of a standard tree.

How many lemons will I get?

A mature, well fed Lemonicious in a large pot commonly carries dozens of fruit a year in warm climates, often with flowers and fruit on the tree at once.

Why are the leaves yellowing?

In pots it is nearly always hunger or waterlogging. Feed with citrus fertiliser, check the pot drains freely, and new growth should flush green.

Is it safe around pets?

Citrus foliage and skin oils are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, so position the pot out of reach of determined nibblers. The fruit on your bench is not the issue; the plant itself is.
