Growing Sky Pencil Japanese Holly in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to part shade. It is a plant for cool temperate, warm temperate and Mediterranean climates: frost, wind and humid summers are all fine, but it is not suited to the subtropics or tropics.

Soil. Slightly acidic, well drained soil with steady moisture. Work compost through before planting and mulch to keep the shallow roots cool. It dislikes waterlogging and baking dry sand in equal measure.

Water and feed. Water regularly through the first two summers, then keep an eye on it in heatwaves. Feed with a complete fertiliser in spring.

Pruning. Barely needed. A light trim in late spring sharpens the column; there is no call to cut hard into old wood.

Common questions

How far apart should I plant it for a hedge?

50cm apart for a continuous narrow screen. The columns thicken and meet within a few seasons, and the hedge never grows deeper than about 60cm.

How fast does it grow?

Steadily rather than quickly. That measured pace is the trade off for a column that never sprawls or needs hard correction, so start with larger plants if you want height sooner.

Is it safe around pets and children?

The leaves are spine free, but the small black berries are toxic if eaten, so we do not class it as pet safe. Site it away from pets and toddlers who chew.

Can it live in a pot long term?

Yes, it is one of the better hedging plants for containers. Use a pot at least 400mm wide, a premium potting mix, steady summer water and a spring feed.

Will it grow in Brisbane?

No. In subtropical and tropical climates it underperforms; a compact lilly pilly gives those gardens the same effect with better results.
