Green Queen Pothos (Epipremnum aureum 'Green Queen') is an evergreen trailing vine with soft, marble-variegated heart-shaped leaves in shades of green. It grows quickly, about 30cm tall in a pot and trailing a metre or more, and it brightens a shelf, a basket or a post without any fuss. Pothos is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, so hang it out of reach of pets.
Why you'll love it
-
Marbled leaves. Soft variegation in shades of green gives each leaf its own pattern, and brightens a dull corner.
-
Quick and easy. A fast grower that stays fresh all year and rewards very little attention.
-
Trails or climbs. Let it cascade from a pot, climb a post, or scramble up a moss pole.
-
Adapts to light. It thrives in bright, indirect light and tolerates lower light, though its variegation is strongest in good light.
-
Good for new plant owners. Few indoor plants are as forgiving of a missed watering or a gap in routine.
Where it works best
Hanging pots and shelves. Plant one per hanging pot so the vines can cascade. It also looks good on top of a bookcase or kitchen cupboard.
Posts and moss poles. Train the stems up a pole indoors, where it will climb with aerial roots and produce larger leaves as it matures.
Tropical garden tree bases. In frost-free tropical gardens, plant at the base of a tree to climb the trunk, 40cm apart for a thick cover.
Growing Green Queen Pothos in Australia
Position and climate. Bright, indirect light suits it best, and it tolerates lower light, though the variegation fades toward plain green in deep shade. Plant in a sheltered position and avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Outdoors it suits frost-free tropical and subtropical gardens. It is frost tender, so elsewhere grow it indoors. In warm, humid regions, keep it in a pot or basket rather than the ground, because pothos can climb hard and escape.
Soil. Use a free-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Never let the pot stand in water.
Water and feed. Water regularly for the first 12 weeks or so, then whenever the top of the soil is dry through the growing season. Feed with a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Pruning. Remove any dead leaves, and trim the ends of long vines to encourage branching. Cuttings root easily in water.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Green Queen Pothos as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives small, with short runners, so pot it into a larger pot or hanging basket soon after unpacking, with two or three tubes together for a fuller look. Expect new leaves within weeks in warm weather.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will the variegation fade?
It can. The marbled pattern is strongest in bright, indirect light and fades toward plain green in deep shade, so keep it in a well-lit room.
Is it toxic to pets?
Yes. Pothos is toxic to cats and dogs if chewed or eaten, so keep it out of reach, or choose a pet friendly plant if animals have access to your shelves.
How fast does it grow?
Quickly in warm weather. It will cascade from a pot, and with something to climb it can reach well beyond a metre.
