Green Orange Spider Plant (Chlorophytum orchidastrum 'Green Orange') is not your usual spider plant. It forms a neat rosette of broad, deep green leaves held on distinctive orange stems, and stays compact at up to 40cm tall and 50cm wide. It is sometimes sold as Fire Flash, and it suits bright rooms, hanging pots and shady tropical borders.
Why you'll love it
-
Orange stems. The peachy orange leaf stalks stand out against the deep green blades, so the plant has colour without needing flowers.
-
Broad leaves. The leaves are wide like a peace lily's rather than strappy like the common spider plant, which gives the rosette a lush, tropical look.
-
Neat and compact. At up to 40cm tall and 50cm wide it sits happily on a shelf, a desk or a table, or in a pot on a verandah.
-
Indoors or in the garden. Use it in a bright room, a hanging basket or as underplanting in a shaded tropical bed.
-
Makes new plants. Mature plants send out plantlets that can be repotted to make more.
Where it works best
Bright indoor rooms. Place it near a bright window, out of direct sun, on a table, desk or shelf. The orange stems show best at eye level.
Shaded tropical borders. Use it as underplanting beneath palms and shrubs. Plant 45cm apart so the rosettes just touch as they mature.
Hanging baskets and pots. The neat rosette suits a medium pot or a hanging basket where the orange stems can be seen from below.
Growing Green Orange Spider Plant in Australia
Position and climate. Bright, indirect light is best. It tolerates shade, though growth slows and the leaf colour weakens, and direct sun can scorch the leaf tips. It is frost tender, so grow it outdoors in tropical, subtropical and frost free gardens, and indoors elsewhere.
Soil. Use a free-draining potting mix, or garden soil enriched with compost for bed planting.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the growing season and reduce watering in winter. This species dislikes fluoridated water and is sensitive to chemicals, so use rainwater or filtered water where you can. A light feed in spring and summer keeps growth steady.
Pruning. Trim off brown leaves, repot any plantlets to make new plants and give the leaves a cool shower if they look dusty.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Green Orange Spider Plant as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives as a small rosette and builds its leaf size and stem colour as it grows, so pot it into a quality mix and keep it out of harsh sun.
Our tube stock is supplied by our grower, so it comes and goes. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment: press the notify button on this page and we will email you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is Green Orange the same as Fire Flash?
Green Orange is sometimes sold as Fire Flash, so you may see both names. Both describe a rosette of broad green leaves on orange stems.
Why are the leaf tips going brown?
Common causes are direct sun, dry air and fluoride in tap water. Move it out of strong sun and water with rainwater or filtered water.
How much light does it need?
Bright, indirect light gives the best growth and colour. It tolerates shade, but expect slower growth and weaker colour there.
