Weeping Fig (Ficus benjamina) is the tree for a large open site that needs deep shade in a hurry. It settles around 10m tall and 8m wide in an Australian garden, with fine arching branches that hang in soft layers rather than standing stiff. It grows fast and clips beautifully. The catch is the root system, which is aggressive and must be kept well clear of pipes, paving and footings.

Why you'll love it

  • Shade that arrives quickly. A fast grower, so a planted tree throws usable shade within a few seasons rather than a decade.
  • The weeping habit softens hard architecture. Arching branches read far gentler against a rendered wall or a long fence line than a stiff upright canopy.
  • It takes the shears. Few large evergreens shape this well, so it runs as a clipped screen, a column or a standard.
  • Evergreen, and full of birds. Nothing drops in winter, and the small figs draw fruit eating birds into the canopy through the warm months.

Where it works best

Shade tree. Give it an open lawn or paddock position, comfortably clear of the house, the driveway and any service line. That distance is what the roots demand, not caution.

Screening and privacy. Planted 3m apart it forms a tall clipped screen along a boundary, which suits acreage or a large block where a hedge needs serious height.

Feature and topiary. Single specimens shape into balls, columns and standards, and hold that form with two trims a year in a warm climate.

Growing weeping fig in Australia

Position and climate. Full sun to partial shade. This is a tropical, subtropical and warm temperate tree and it is frost tender, so cold inland districts, the tablelands and frosting southern gardens will burn it back. Heat, humidity and wind are taken in its stride.

Soil. Undemanding provided the site drains. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball, backfill with native soil improved with compost, and mulch 75mm deep clear of the trunk.

Water and feed. Deep soak twice a week through the first two summers, then it largely fends for itself. A complete slow release fertiliser in early spring and late summer keeps the leaf colour deep.

Pruning. Trim any time in warm weather, since it reshoots readily from old wood. If the tree sits near paving, install a root barrier at planting rather than lifting pavers later.

What to expect when it arrives

This is ex ground stock: field grown and lifted with a root ball rather than raised in a pot, which is how large specimen figs are supplied. It arrives as an advanced tree with real trunk thickness and an established framework, so prepare the hole and organise machinery or extra hands beforehand.

Expect some leaf drop after transplanting. That is normal at this size, and the canopy refurnishes over one warm season with steady water. Delivered Australia wide, advanced and large stock is freighted at cost, and every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How invasive are the roots?

Very. They are vigorous and surface seeking, capable of lifting paving and finding pipe joints. On a standard suburban block, choose a smaller evergreen instead.

Can it be kept below 10m?

Yes, with commitment. Two trims a year hold it well under its natural height, though the root system keeps expanding regardless of what you do to the canopy.

Will it cope with frost?

Not reliably. In a marginal district a warm sheltered position against a wall helps a young tree through its first winters, but hard frost will damage it.

Why is it dropping leaves after planting?

Transplant shock. A fig moved at this size sheds part of its canopy while the roots re-establish, then refurnishes through the following warm season on steady water.
