Fall In Love Sweetly Japanese Anemone (Anemone hupehensis 'Fall In Love Sweetly') is a tall perennial with long, slender stems topped by large, deep rose-pink, semi-double flowers over a long season. It reaches 60 to 75cm high and 50 to 75cm wide. Unlike ordinary Japanese anemones, which spread through their roots, this one has been bred to be much less vigorous.
Why you'll love it
-
Big, shaggy blooms. The semi-double flowers are larger and bolder than the standard Japanese anemone's, in a deep rose-pink that carries across a garden.
-
A long flowering season. Blooms arrive on tall stems from late summer and keep coming well into autumn, when many borders are tired.
-
Better behaved. Bred to be much less vigorous than the old Japanese anemones, it is far less likely to wander through a border.
-
Very little care. Once established it needs little attention, which suits gardeners who want colour without a weekly job list.
-
Made for dappled shade. It does well in the light shade under trees, where flowering plants are hard to find.
Where it works best
Cottage gardens and mixed borders. Plant 50cm apart in groups of three or five. The tall stems rise above lower plants, and the pink flowers sit well with white and blue.
Under trees. Dappled shade beneath deciduous trees suits it. Keep the soil mulched and moist.
Growing Fall In Love Sweetly Japanese Anemone in Australia
Position and climate. Dappled shade is ideal, with morning sun and afternoon shade in warmer regions. It is frost hardy. In cold climates the plant dies back in winter and reshoots in spring, and in milder places it stays leafy for longer. It is not a plant for hot, dry, exposed sites.
Soil. Rich, moist soil with plenty of compost worked in. Mulch the surface to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for the first four to six weeks, or until the plant is established. In cold climates, add extra mulch in autumn to protect the young roots over their first winter.
Pruning. Cut the old stems to the ground once the plant has died back, or after flowering in mild climates. Established clumps can be divided in late winter.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Fall In Love Sweetly Japanese Anemone as tube stock, in 140mm pots in packs of 10 and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tube stock is a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and the pots give you a bigger clump to start with. Expect a modest first season, with fuller flowering in the second.
Tube stock is grown for us and availability varies. When the tube reads sold out, the grower has none, and the notify button on this page sends you an email the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Will it spread like other Japanese anemones?
Much less. Standard Japanese anemones spread through their roots, but this variety is far less vigorous. The clump still widens over the years, and it can be divided if it outgrows its space.
Does it need shade?
Dappled shade suits it best. It tolerates more sun in cool regions if the soil stays moist, but in warm areas give it protection from the afternoon sun.
Does it die back in winter?
In cold climates, yes. The stems die down and the plant reshoots in spring, so mark the spot. A layer of mulch over the crown helps it through the winter. Like other anemones it is mildly toxic if eaten, so keep it away from chewing pets.
