Cherry Moon Grevillea (Grevillea 'Cherry Moon') is a low, wide native shrub with proper red flowers: dense, nectar-rich, cherry-red blooms that appear most months of the year in warm climates. It reaches about 1.2m tall and 1.5m wide, was bred at Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, and suits wildlife gardens, mixed beds and informal hedging. Its frost tolerance has not been tested, so give it a frost-free spot.
Why you'll love it
-
True red flowers. Most large-flowered red grevilleas are pink-tinged, peach or orange. This one is a clear cherry red.
-
Flowers most of the year. In warm climates, blooms appear most months, which keeps colour in the garden through the seasons.
-
A magnet for birds. Dense, nectar-rich flowers make it a favourite with native birds.
-
A versatile size. At 1.2m by 1.5m it works as a feature shrub, a bed filler or an informal hedge.
-
A low, wide habit. The shrub stays low and spreads wide, so it fills a bed or a hedge line from near ground level.
Where it works best
Wildlife and native gardens. Group it with other nectar plants so birds have food and shelter close together.
Informal hedging. Plant 1.2m apart in a single row. The low, wide shrubs merge into a flowering hedge about 1.2m high.
Mixed flower beds. Use it as a mid-height shrub among perennials and grasses, where the red flowers stand out.
Growing Cherry Moon Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Part shade to full sun, with full sun giving the longest flowering period. It performs best in warm climates. Frost tolerance has not been tested, so plant it in a frost-free spot or protect it in winter.
Soil. Well composted and freely draining. Good drainage is essential.
Water and feed. Water during the first 8 to 12 weeks, until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, and choose one with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas can be sensitive to phosphorus.
Pruning. A light prune after flowering promotes dense growth.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Cherry Moon Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes suit a hedge planted in numbers, and the potted packs give a fuller start. Plants arrive small and upright, and grow into their rounded shape over the first couple of seasons.
Tubes are supplied by our grower and are not always in stock. A sold out tube simply means the grower has none today, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
