Bracelet Honey Myrtle (Melaleuca armillaris dwarf form) is a compact Australian native that settles at about 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide, which makes it one of the most practical natives for a low formal hedge. Fine needle like foliage gives it a soft texture that clips beautifully, and in spring it carries creamy white bottlebrush flowers wrapped around the stems like bands. Position and climate. Full sun for the densest growth and heaviest flowering. It suits subtropical, warm temperate, cool temperate, Mediterranean and arid or semi-arid gardens, most of the country outside the wet tropics. It is genuinely frost hardy, so cold southern and tableland gardens are within range.

Soil. Very adaptable and tolerant of poor soil, sand and light clay. Drainage is preferred, though this species handles damp ground better than most natives. Mulch 75mm deep, clear of the stems.

Water and feed. Deep soak weekly through the first summer, then only in extended dry spells. Use a low phosphorus native fertiliser once in early spring if growth is slow, since standard garden products carry more phosphorus than most natives tolerate.

Pruning. Tip prune from planting to build density, then trim after flowering in late spring or early summer. It reshoots from old wood, unusual for a native shrub, so a neglected plant can be cut back hard rather than replaced.

One metre apart in a single row. Closer spacing does not close the hedge faster and only makes watering and feeding harder while the roots compete.

How tall will this dwarf form actually get?

About 1.5m tall and 1.5m wide left untrimmed, well short of the 6m the species reaches. Regular clipping holds it lower again, comfortably at 1m.

Will it cope with a frosty inland garden?
