Arisa Red Anthurium (Anthurium andreanum 'Arisa Red') is a compact flamingo flower, 60cm to 80cm tall and about 60cm wide, with deep red, heart shaped blooms that taper to a point. The evergreen leaves are heart shaped and pointed too. Grown in a pot or a sheltered tropical border, it brings a strong red to shady spots.
Why you'll love it
-
A deep, strong red. Vivid, glossy red flowers stand out against dark green leaves, in a place where little else flowers.
-
Three weeks in a vase. Anthuriums are popular as cut flowers for their exceptional vase life of about three weeks.
-
Evergreen leaves. Pointed, heart shaped foliage stays on the plant all year, so it looks good between flowers.
-
Happy in shade. It thrives in a sheltered position out of direct sun, a combination few red flowering plants offer.
-
Container friendly. It suits pots, indoor gardens and the layered undergrowth of a tropical bed.
Where it works best
Layered tropical beds. Plant 60cm apart beneath taller plants, where the red flowers create a focal point in the shade.
Pots and indoor gardens. Use a free draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes, in bright filtered light away from cold draughts.
Cut flower patches. A small group in a shaded courtyard provides long lasting stems for the house.
Growing Arisa Red Anthurium in Australia
Position and climate. Arisa Red wants a sheltered position and avoids direct sunlight. It likes humid conditions and needs protection from frost, so it grows outdoors only in tropical and subtropical gardens. In cooler regions treat it as an indoor or patio plant that comes inside when temperatures drop.
Soil. Free draining, organic rich soil, or a good potting mix in a container. Mulch the surface to keep the roots moist.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, and keep it moist in dry periods. Apply slow release fertiliser in spring, and liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks in the warmer months at half strength to avoid burn.
Pruning. Remove spent flowers and tired leaves at the base. Wipe indoor leaves with a damp cloth to freshen the shine. The leaves contain a poisonous substance, so avoid contact with skin.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Arisa Red Anthurium as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back. Expect a small young plant that grows steadily rather than quickly, and needs warmth to do it. Unpack promptly, plant it in a sheltered spot or pot it up, and keep the soil evenly moist.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
