Soil Conditioners and Wetting Agents

Most plant problems start in the soil, and no amount of fertiliser fixes ground that repels water, sets like concrete or sits at the wrong pH. This Plant Doctor range covers the four jobs a soil conditioner can do: get water in, open up clay, correct acidity and build the soil's ability to hold nutrients. Work out which of those you are facing first, because the products are not interchangeable. Gypsum will not fix acidity, and lime will not fix water repellency.

Match the conditioner to the soil problem

  • Water beads or runs off. Nature's Soil Wetter, as a super concentrated liquid or as granules on a zeolite base. Both use plant-derived surfactants.
  • Heavy or compacted clay. Clay Breaker Gypsum Granules improve the structure of compacted or sodic clay without changing soil pH. Micronised Gypsum is the liquid form: shake, dilute and pour, with no dust.
  • Acidic soil. Lime Granules raise the pH so plants can use the nutrients already in the ground. Dolomite Granules neutralise acidity while supplying calcium and magnesium.
  • Sandy soil that will not hold feed. VolcaMin zeolite is a natural mineral that holds water and nutrients in the root zone and stays in the soil as a permanent conditioner. It comes as a powder under 1mm, a 1 to 2mm granule for potting mixes, seed raising and garden beds, and a coarse 2 to 4mm grade.
  • Tired, depleted soil. Quantum H liquid humic acid, Humic Acid Powder and fulvic acid in liquid or powder form help release locked-up nutrients and feed soil microbes. Worm Magic comes as a liquid compost tea brewed from worm castings, and as casting pellets that add microbes and organic matter.

Preparing soil before you plant

Conditioning is easiest before the plants go in. On clay, spread gypsum across the whole bed, not just the planting hole, or the hole becomes a sump. On sand, work zeolite and worm casting pellets through the soil so water and feed stay near the new roots. For pots, the Potting Mix and Soil Improver granules are blended into any potting mix to raise its water and nutrient holding, and because they do not dissolve they last for many months. Finish with a wetting agent, then water in your new hedge or trees.

Common questions

Gypsum or lime: which does my soil need?

Gypsum is for structure: it opens up clay and leaves pH alone. Lime and dolomite are for acidity: they raise pH. A simple pH test tells you which way to go.

Liquid or granular soil wetter?

The liquid is diluted and watered on, which suits pots and problem patches. The granules spread like a fertiliser over lawns and beds, and their zeolite base also helps hold nutrients. Neither one is a fertiliser.

Do soil conditioners replace fertiliser?

No. They improve how soil holds and releases water and nutrients, so the granular fertiliser or liquid feed you apply afterwards goes further. Delivered Australia wide.
