The Wine Red Cosette Egg is a single size feature pot in glazed terracotta, 550mm across and 500mm high, with a glossy wine red finish over a classic egg silhouette. It is a specimen pot rather than a background one: at 95 to 110 litres it holds enough mix to keep a serious plant going. A drainage hole is built into the base.

Why you'll love it

  • Fired glaze, not paint. Glazed terracotta keeps its gloss and colour through weather in a way a coated finish does not.
  • Real capacity. 95 to 110 litres of mix is a proper root run, so a shrub or small tree can stay in it for years rather than months.
  • Weight where you want it. Terracotta is heavy, which is right for a tall plant in an exposed courtyard.
  • Drainage built in. The hole is already there, so the pot plants up without drilling into fired clay.

Sizes and what fits in them

One size only, 550mm wide by 500mm high, scaled for a single specimen.

  • Feature shrubs. The volume suits an established shrub you want to hold at a set size and shape.
  • Statement foliage. Broad leafed plants read well against the gloss and curve of the egg form.
  • Small trees. Enough mix for a small tree or a clipped standard, provided you feed and water it as a potted plant.

Plant one thing in it: an egg shape narrows at the shoulder, so a crowded mix hides the form.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Glazed terracotta, textured under a glossy wine red glaze. Rinse or wipe it and the finish comes straight back.

Outdoors. Weather resistant and suited to outdoor conditions, and it works indoors where the surface underneath is protected. There is no frost rating on record, and saturated terracotta is at risk in a hard freeze, so in frost prone districts keep it under cover through winter.

Drainage. One hole in the base and no saucer supplied. Raise it on pot feet outdoors so the hole stays clear, and use a saucer or a stand indoors.

What to expect when it arrives

The pot ships empty and packed on its own, because glazed terracotta at 550mm is heavy and chips at the rim in transit. Two people and a trolley is the sensible way to shift it, and the position needs deciding before you fill it: with 100 litres of wet mix in it, it is not moving again. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
