Pirate's Gold Ixora (Ixora 'Pirate's Gold') is a glossy evergreen shrub about 1m tall and wide, with clusters of bright, warm gold flowers like shiny doubloons held above the foliage. It makes a low hedge, a feature plant or a container specimen, and once established it tolerates light frost and drought.
Why you'll love it
-
Doubloon-gold flowers. Rich, deep golden clusters brighten a garden bed and stand out against the dark green leaves.
-
Glossy evergreen leaves. The foliage is polished and dense, so the plant looks smart even without flowers.
-
Tougher than it looks. Established plants take light frost and dry spells in their stride.
-
Easy to place. At 1m by 1m it works as a hedge, a border plant or a pot specimen.
Where it works best
Low hedges. Plant 60cm apart in a row and clip after flowering for a dense golden hedge about 1m high.
Feature planting. A group of three set 80cm apart makes a bright focal point at the end of a path or beside an entry.
Borders and containers. In a mixed border it pairs well with dark foliage. In a pot at least 40cm wide it suits a sunny patio.
Growing Pirate's Gold Ixora in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to a partly shaded position. It is at its best in tropical and subtropical gardens, where it flowers reliably, and it tolerates light frost and drought once established. Protect it from heavier frost.
Soil. Well drained soil. Mulch to hold moisture and keep the roots cool.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Fertilise with a slow release product in spring. If leaves yellow following dry conditions, feed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser for fresh green foliage.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote dense growth and flowering.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pirate's Gold Ixora as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly in warm soil. Tubes are the economical choice for a hedge, and they fill out into a rounded shrub within a season or two.
Because tube stock comes from our grower, it is not always on hand. A sold out tube on this page means the grower has none at the moment, and the notify button emails you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
