White Malay Ixora (Ixora 'White Malay') is a compact evergreen shrub, up to 1m tall and wide, with showy clusters of white flowers splashed with pink. The buds stand proud of each cluster, giving the heads a distinctive spiky look, and the glossy foliage stays fresh all year. Once established it tolerates light frost and drought.
Why you'll love it
-
White with pink splashes. Fresh white flowers carry a blush of pink, a softer look than the usual hot ixora colours.
-
Distinctive buds. The buds stand above the flower cluster, which gives each head a textured, sculpted look.
-
Glossy evergreen leaves. Dense, polished foliage looks smart all year and makes a good background for the blooms.
-
A cut flower. The flower heads can be cut to bring colour indoors.
-
Light frost and drought. Established plants take both in their stride.
Where it works best
Hedging. Plant 60cm apart in a row for a low flowering hedge about 1m high, clipped after flowering.
Borders and specimens. White heads stand out against dark foliage in a shaded or sunny bed. A single 300mm plant makes an instant feature.
Containers and bonsai. It suits a large pot on a patio, and in subtropical regions it can even be trained as a bonsai.
Growing White Malay Ixora in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to a partly shaded position. It is at its best in tropical and subtropical gardens, and an established plant tolerates light frost and drought. Protect it from heavier frost.
Soil. Well drained soil. Mulch after planting to retain moisture.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Fertilise with a slow release product in spring. If leaves yellow following dry conditions, feed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote dense growth and flowering.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell White Malay Ixora as tube stock and as single plants in 300mm pots. Tubes are the economical choice for a hedge. A 300mm plant is established enough to give you a feature shrub on the day it is planted.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
