The Magnificent Sabal Palm (Sabinaria magnifica) is a collector's fan palm, described by botanists only in 2013 from rainforest on the Panama and Colombia border. It settles at around 5m tall and 3m wide in cultivation, carrying huge deeply split fans on a short trunk. If you want a tropical feature almost nobody else has, this is it.

Why you'll love it

  • Genuinely rare. Known from a small area of Central and South American rainforest and seldom offered, so most gardeners have never seen one.
  • Enormous fans on a small frame. The leaves are the drawcard, deeply divided and held on a compact plant of about 5m by 3m.
  • Built for heat and humidity. Muggy summers that stress other feature plants are its normal weather.
  • A courtyard scale palm. At 3m across it suits a large pot or a small tropical courtyard rather than open lawn.

Where it works best

Feature planting. Give it a sheltered, warm position with high overhead light where the fans can be seen whole. Underplant with low ferns so nothing competes with the leaf shape.

Pots and containers. A pot of 600mm or wider suits it, and container growing keeps it slower and smaller. The mix must stay moist without souring.

Poolside. The compact crown and modest litter make it workable beside a pool, set back so the fans arch over paving rather than water.

Growing Magnificent Sabal Palm in Australia

Position and climate. This is a tropical and subtropical plant and it is frost tender, so anything cooler is a glasshouse or sheltered courtyard proposition. Filtered light or morning sun suits it better than harsh all day exposure, which mirrors how it grows under a rainforest canopy.

Soil. Rich, free draining and high in organic matter. Work compost through the bed and mulch 75mm deep, kept clear of the trunk. It wants steady moisture without sitting in water.

Water and feed. Keep the root zone evenly moist through the warm months, easing back in winter. Feed a palm fertiliser containing magnesium and potassium in early spring and mid summer.

Pruning. Remove spent leaves at the base once they have browned right off, and never cut into green fronds. A palm has one growing point, so crown damage cannot be repaired.

What to expect when it arrives

This palm is offered in one size, a 140mm by 300mm bag tube. That is a young plant with a handful of juvenile leaves and no trunk yet, normal for a species this scarce and this slow. The price reflects rarity rather than size, so you are buying a long term specimen, not an instant feature.

It travels well because the plant is small and the root ball contained. Grow it on in a pot for a season or two before planting out. Australian cultivation records are thin, so treat it as a rewarding experiment rather than a proven landscape palm. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant carries our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions

How big does it actually get?

Around 5m tall and 3m wide over many years in a warm garden. It is slow, and the plant we send is a juvenile, so early seasons are about leaf size rather than height.

Will it survive a cool southern winter?

Not outdoors. It is frost tender and suited to tropical and subtropical conditions, so cooler regions need a heated glasshouse or a bright indoor position with real humidity.

Can I keep it in a pot permanently?

Yes, and for most gardeners that is safer. Use a pot of at least 600mm with free draining mix, keep it evenly moist, and shift it under shelter when nights turn cold.

Why is a small plant this expensive?

Seed is scarce and germination slow, so very few nurseries grow it. You are paying for availability, not size.
