Dwarf Orange Ixora (Ixora 'Dwarf Orange') is a rounded, compact tropical shrub that reaches just 50cm tall and 30cm wide. Bright orange flowers cover it in clusters through spring and summer, set against glossy, vivid green leaves. It is a small plant with plenty of colour, made for stepover hedges, patio pots and mass plantings.
Why you'll love it
-
Bright orange clusters. The flowers open in tight, rounded heads that cover the plant through spring and summer.
-
Glossy foliage. Vivid green leaves keep the shrub looking fresh between flushes of flowers.
-
A small footprint. At 50cm by 30cm it fits narrow beds, borders and pots where larger shrubs would not.
-
Clips into a low hedge. Dense, rounded growth responds well to trimming, so it forms a neat, colourful edge.
Where it works best
Stepover hedges. Plant 30cm apart in a single row for a low flowering hedge about 50cm high, along a path, driveway or garden bed.
Mass planting. Set plants 30cm apart in staggered rows for a block of orange through spring and summer.
Patio pots. One plant suits a 30cm pot. Give it plenty of light, and in a cooler region it can come under cover when frost threatens.
Growing Dwarf Orange Ixora in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade, with plenty of light for the best flowering. Ixoras are tropical and enjoy humidity, so tropical and subtropical gardens suit them best. They are frost tender, so in cooler areas grow it in a container and shelter it through winter.
Soil. Well drained soil that is slightly acid. Alkaline soil causes the leaves to yellow, so use a potting mix made for azaleas and camellias in containers.
Water and feed. Water frequently, since ixoras prefer humid conditions. If leaves begin to yellow after dry weather, feed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser to bring back lush green foliage.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to maintain dense growth. Protect the plant from frost.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Dwarf Orange Ixora as tube stock: a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly in warm soil. Plant tubes out once the weather has warmed, and expect them to fill into a dense little shrub over a season.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out on this page, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
How big does Dwarf Orange Ixora grow?
About 50cm tall and 30cm wide, so it stays low enough for stepover hedging and fits a medium pot for years.
Why are the leaves turning yellow?
Usually alkaline soil or dry conditions. Switch to acidic mulch or potting mix, keep the water up, and feed with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
Can I grow it in a cool climate?
Yes, in a container. Keep it in the brightest spot you have, and bring it under cover before frost. Some gardeners keep it as a bright houseplant.
