Can I get a colour that is not listed?

Yes. StoneLite, GRC and Terrazzo pots can be custom sprayed in almost any Dulux or Colorbond colour for an extra $60. Contact us before ordering.

The Emmerson Trough is a long rectangular planter in lightweight composite, finished in deep black and built for outdoor use. It sells in three lengths, 600mm, 800mm and 1000mm, and the shape is the point: a trough gives you a continuous run of planting depth along a wall, a balcony edge or a path.

Why you'll love it

  • Light for its size. Composite rather than solid concrete, so even the metre long size can be positioned by hand before it is filled.
  • Drainage is built in. A drainage hole is moulded into the trough, so excess water escapes instead of sitting around the roots after a downpour.
  • Real depth for screening. The larger sizes are as deep as they are wide, which is what a screening shrub needs to hold itself upright in wind.

Sizes and what fits in them

Three lengths, and the width and depth grow with the length rather than staying fixed.

  • 600mm. 60cm long, 30cm wide and 30cm high, about 45 to 50 litres. Herbs, compact flowering plants and a tight row of colour on a balcony.
  • 800mm. 80cm long, 38cm wide and 38cm high, about 90 to 100 litres. Shrubs and mixed planting, or three medium plants spaced evenly along the run.
  • 1000mm. 100cm long, 47cm wide and 47cm high, about 170 to 180 litres. The screening size, with root volume enough for compact screening shrubs and feature shrubs.

Caught between two sizes, take the larger.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Lightweight composite in a black finish, sturdy once planted. Rinse it with water or wipe it with a damp cloth when it dusts up.

Outdoors. This is an outdoor planter and is not listed for indoor use. Seal it with an appropriate sealant before planting: the supplier recommends it, and it is far easier on an empty trough. We hold no frost rating for the finish, so in frost prone districts keep it lifted clear of wet ground.

Drainage. A drainage hole is included and no saucer comes with the trough. Plan for water to run out underneath, so choose a paved edge or a garden bed rather than a timber deck.

What to expect when it arrives

Troughs ship empty, with no plants, potting mix or sealant. The 1000mm size arrives as a single piece and is awkward to carry alone, so set it in its final position before filling. Troughs are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
