White Wash Timber Crate

The White Wash Timber Crate is a rectangular timber planter box, 700mm long, 400mm wide and 400mm high, finished in a soft white wash. It is the shape for a run of planting rather than a single specimen: herbs along a kitchen wall, colour down the edge of a patio, a mixed planting on a landing.

Why you'll love it

• A long bed, not a single hole. At 700mm it takes a row of plants, so you can mix heights and textures instead of committing to one plant.
• White wash over natural timber. The grain reads through the finish, which is why it works where a solid colour looks flat.
• Weather resistant, indoors or out. Rated for both, so it can serve as a planter on the patio or as decorative storage inside.

Sizes and what fits in them

This listing is the 700mm by 400mm crate, standing 400mm high. Other sizes in the range are sold separately and group together well.

• Herbs and kitchen planting. The 700mm length takes five or six herb plants in a row with room to keep cutting them.
• Flowering colour. One crate holds a seasonal display that would otherwise need three separate pots.
• Small shrubs and mixed planting. The 400mm depth suits compact shrubs with trailing plants over the front edge.

Material, weathering and drainage

Material. Natural timber under a white wash finish. Slight variation in the wash from crate to crate is normal and comes with the timber rather than from a fault. Brush it off or wipe it down as needed.

Outdoors. The construction is weather resistant rather than sealed for permanent wet. Stand it on feet, pavers or a bench rather than directly on soil: standing water at the base is what shortens the life of any timber planter. Expect the white wash to soften with sun and rain.

Drainage. No drainage holes are listed for this crate, so use a liner when you plant into it. A liner protects the timber, holds soil moisture and lets you set drainage on your own terms. Sitting potted plants inside works as well and keeps the timber dry.

What to expect when it arrives

The crate ships empty and packed to travel on its own, never sent planted. Grain, knots and small differences in the white wash come with a timber product. At 700mm it is bulkier in the hand than the numbers suggest, so clear the space first. Delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95.
