Strawberry Sundae Grevillea (Grevillea 'Strawberry Sundae') is a bushy native shrub, 1 to 2m tall and up to 1.5m wide, with bottlebrush flowers in peach and lemon-cream, each topped with a red stigma. The ferny, deeply lobed foliage stays soft and attractive all year, and the flowers last for long periods in winter and spring. It is a versatile size for a low informal hedge, a feature plant or a large pot.
Why you'll love it
-
Two-tone flowers with a red tip. Peach and lemon-cream blooms with a contrasting red stigma give each flower head plenty of detail up close.
-
Flowers through winter and spring. The bottlebrush blooms last for long periods in the cooler months.
-
Ferny foliage all year. Soft, deeply lobed leaves keep the shrub looking fresh when it is not in flower.
-
A versatile size. At 1 to 2m tall and up to 1.5m wide it fits hedges, borders and big containers.
-
Wild birds visit. Honeyeaters flock to grevilleas at dusk and dawn, and this one is no exception.
Where it works best
Low informal hedge. Plant 1m apart in a row. At up to 1.5m wide the shrubs link into a soft hedge, and light pruning after flowering holds it near the low end of its height.
Feature planting. Use a single plant beside a path or door, where the flowers can be seen up close.
Large containers. Grow it in a big pot with a free-draining mix. Water pots more often than garden beds, and feed with a low phosphorus native fertiliser.
Growing Strawberry Sundae Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun suits it best. It tolerates light frost and copes with subtropical, warm temperate and Mediterranean climates. In regions with hard frosts, keep it in a sheltered spot or in a pot you can move.
Soil. Well drained clay loam or sandy soil with a neutral to acid pH. Grevilleas tolerate dry spells but not soggy ground.
Water and feed. Water for the first 8 to 12 weeks until established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Light pruning after flowering promotes dense growth. That is usually all it needs.
What to expect when it arrives
Strawberry Sundae Grevillea is sold as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tubes arrive small, so expect a little patience before the first flowers, then a steady build as the shrub fills out.
Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out. Press the notify button on the page and we will email you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
