Red Glitter Azalea (Azalea x hybrida 'Red Glitter') is a compact evergreen shrub, about 1m high and wide, covered in single rose red to coral red flowers each spring. Its simple, vivid blooms and tidy shape make it a natural fit for Japanese style, woodland and container plantings.
Why you'll love it
-
Vibrant single flowers. Simple, rose red to coral red blooms cover the shrub in spring.
-
Compact and tidy. It stays around 1m by 1m, so it suits small beds, courtyards and pots.
-
Made for Japanese style gardens. The single flowers and neat habit sit well with maples, mossy stones and gravel.
-
Evergreen. Leaves hold all year, giving a dark green base for the spring flowers.
-
Works as a low hedge. In a row the shrubs knit together into a low flowering hedge or border.
Where it works best
Japanese and woodland gardens. Plant under taller trees with ferns and Japanese maples, where its single flowers add a flash of red in spring.
Low hedges. Plant 70cm apart in a single row. The compact shrubs close into a neat low hedge that is rose red in spring.
Pots. A glazed or stone pot on a patio suits it well. Use azalea mix and keep pets away, as azaleas are toxic.
Growing Red Glitter Azalea in Australia
Position and climate. Azaleas love dappled light, with morning sun, afternoon sun or both. A full sun location may be acceptable but not in a hot, dry, exposed position. It suits subtropical, warm temperate and cool temperate gardens. Established plants cope with light frost, but shelter them from hard frost.
Soil. Plant in free draining soil rich in organic matter. Azaleas prefer acid ground, so mulch with pine bark or pine needles and keep lime away from the roots.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly until established, usually around 12 weeks, then continue watering regularly for the first twelve months. Feed with a slow release fertiliser formulated for azaleas.
Pruning. Prune after spring flowering to promote a dense habit and flowers next season.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Red Glitter Azalea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. It arrives as a small plant and fills out over the seasons, so allow time for the full display.
Our tube stock is supplied by our grower, so it comes and goes. If the tube shows as sold out, the grower has none at the moment: press the notify button and we will email you the day it returns.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
What goes well with it in a Japanese style garden?
Japanese maples, ferns, mondo grass and mossy rocks all work, as does raked gravel. Keep the planting simple so the red flowers stand out.
Is it safe for pets?
No. Azaleas are toxic to cats, dogs and other animals if chewed or eaten. Plant it away from pets that browse on garden plants.
How big a pot does it need?
A pot of about 40cm across suits a mature plant. Use azalea mix, water regularly and repot only when the roots fill the container.
