Pink Surprise Grevillea (Grevillea x banksii 'Pink Surprise') is a fast-growing tree-shrub up to 4m tall and 3m wide, with large, glossy green, ferny foliage. Peachy-pink brush flowers, pink in the centre with cream styles, seem to appear throughout the year, and honeyeaters and spinebills turn up for them. It is taller and more open than the similar Misty Pink, with larger flowers.
Why you'll love it
-
Flowers throughout the year. Peach-pink blooms keep appearing across the seasons.
-
Fast, glossy growth. The large green ferny leaves grow quickly and look good even out of flower.
-
Feeds small birds. Honeyeaters and spinebills come for the nectar.
-
Handles humid, coastal gardens. It is happy in humid conditions and suits native and coastal plantings.
-
Tolerant of hard pruning. It can be hard pruned or even coppiced if it outgrows its space.
Where it works best
Coastal and native gardens. Use it as a taller background shrub in native beds, where it brings birds close to the house.
Informal screens. Plant 2m apart in a row. The tall, open habit forms a loose screen of up to 4m.
Wildlife gardens. A flowering plant with year-round nectar sustains honeyeaters when other plants are quiet.
Growing Pink Surprise Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. Full sun to part shade gives the best flowering. It tolerates drought once established and is happy in humid conditions, so it suits subtropical and warm temperate coastal gardens.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil. Apply mulch and water regularly during the first 12 weeks, or until the plant is established.
Water and feed. Water regularly through the first 12 weeks. After that it tolerates dry conditions. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent.
Pruning. Prune after flowering to promote a dense habit and prolific flowers. It can be hard pruned if needed, or even coppiced to renew an old or overgrown plant.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pink Surprise Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly and in 140mm pots in packs of 10. Tubes are the economical choice for a screen, while the 140mm pots give a faster start. Expect new growth within weeks in warm weather, as this is a fast grower. Our grower does not always have tube stock to send. When the tube reads sold out, the notify button on the page will email you the day it is available again.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
