Pink Passion Cordyline (Cordyline australis 'Pink Passion') is a fountain of slender, fairly stiff leaves that grows about 1.8m tall and wide. The foliage is dark brown edged with plum-pink, it twists along its length, and it rises from a central trunk. It is a bold accent plant for pots, planters and mixed beds.
Why you'll love it
-
Colour in every month. Dark chocolate leaves with bright plum-pink edges hold their colour right through the year.
-
Movement in the foliage. The leaves twist along their length, so the plant seems to move even on a still day.
-
Hardy and low fuss. Cordylines are surprisingly hardy, tolerate dry conditions and ask for very little care.
-
Made for pots. It suits pots and planters on a patio, balcony or entry.
-
Cut it back and it regrows. If a plant gets too tall, cutting it back is fine, because it regrows from the stem.
Where it works best
Accent and feature planting. A single plant makes a strong focal point in a courtyard or at a path junction, where the colour reads from a distance.
Mixed beds. Use it to add pops of dark colour among green and silver foliage. For a repeat planting, set plants 1.5m apart.
Pots, planters and poolside. The upright form and strong colour give a pool surround, entry or balcony a clean architectural line in a large pot.
Growing Pink Passion Cordyline in Australia
Position and climate. Cordylines are worth a go in most protected areas, in full sun to part shade. This one is surprisingly tolerant of dry conditions, though growth is restricted when it is dry, and it should come through an overnight frost once established. Young plants need protection.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil. Mulch and fertilise at planting.
Water and feed. Mulch and water regularly for around 12 weeks, until the plant is established. After that it copes with dry spells, but it grows better with some water.
Pruning. Remove any dead foliage as it appears. If plants become too tall, cut them back in spring. Cutting off the foliage is fine, as the plant regrows from the stem.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pink Passion Cordyline as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly, and in 200mm pots in packs of 6. Tubes are the economical way to build a repeat planting, and the 200mm pots give a larger plant with more colour from the start. Expect a small clump of leaves on arrival that gains height and a trunk over time.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.
