Pick o The Crop Grevillea (Grevillea bipinnatifida x thyrsoides 'Pick o The Crop') is a low, spreading native shrub about 50cm high and 1m wide. Fine, ferny grey-green foliage carries dark red-pink conical flowers, and the plant is hardy, adaptable and frost tolerant. It is compact enough for pots, rockeries and the front of a border.
Why you'll love it
-
Compact and neat. At 50cm by 1m it stays low and mounding, so it suits small spaces.
-
Handsome foliage. The ferny grey-green leaves are attractive even when nothing is in flower.
-
Deeply coloured flowers. Dark red-pink conical blooms add rich colour at the front of a bed.
-
Hardy and frost tolerant. It is an adaptable plant that handles frost and is relatively hardy once established.
-
Happy in a pot. The low shape suits containers, and the dense foliage looks good on a patio or entry.
Where it works best
Pots and containers. Choose a pot at least 30cm wide, fill it with a free draining native mix, and keep it in a warm, sunny position.
Borders and rockeries. Plant 1m apart along the front of a bed or among rocks, where its low habit softens hard edges.
Native and wildlife gardens. It adds a low layer of nectar-rich flowers beneath taller natives.
Growing Pick o The Crop Grevillea in Australia
Position and climate. A warm, sunny position suits it best. It is relatively hardy once established and tolerates frost, which makes it a dependable choice across a wide range of temperate and southern gardens.
Soil. Plant in well drained soil and mulch well. In a pot, use a free draining mix and never let the saucer sit full of water.
Water and feed. Water regularly until the plant is established. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser when buds form, with phosphorus under 3 per cent, because grevilleas are phosphorus-sensitive.
Pruning. Light pruning after flowering promotes new compact growth, but it is not necessary. This is a plant you can mostly leave alone.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Pick o The Crop Grevillea as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Expect a small young plant that starts out compact and slowly builds into a mound. Plant it in a sunny spot, mulch around it and water through its first summer. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the page reads sold out, use the notify button and you will get an email the day it returns.
