HibisQs Double Apollo Hibiscus (Hibiscus 'HibisQs Double Apollo') is the frilled form of the Apollo hibiscus, a dwarf bush about 1.5m high and 1m wide. Its flowers carry many petals in yellow with reddish-orange centres, and they are large for the size of the plant. It flowers through the warmer months and suits small gardens, low hedges and pots.
Why you'll love it
-
Frilled, many-petalled flowers. The extra petals give each bloom a ruffled, full look that single hibiscus do not have.
-
Sunrise colours. Yellow petals open around reddish-orange centres, warm tones that suit sunny gardens and light walls.
-
Dwarf stature. The bush stays within about 1.5m by 1m, so it is practical for small beds and containers, with little to do beyond water, mulch and a feed.
-
Container ready. It does well in patio pots and urban balconies, in a sunny spot out of the wind.
-
A bold feature. One plant in the right position anchors a corner, and the flowers are big enough to show from a distance.
Where it works best
Feature planting. Put a single plant where the eye lands: beside the front door, at the end of a path or in a pot on a sunny terrace.
Dwarf hedge. Plant 70cm apart for a low border of ruffled flowers. The bushes meet at about 1m wide and stay roughly 1.5m high.
Massed planting. In a group at 70cm spacing, the yellow and orange tones merge into a warm drift that works well along a driveway or fence.
Growing HibisQs Double Apollo Hibiscus in Australia
Position and climate. Plant it in a sunny, sheltered position in the warmer parts of Australia, and protect it from strong wind, exposed sites and frost. It enjoys humidity. In regions with frost, keep it in a container so you can move it to shelter.
Soil. Free draining soil rich in organic matter, kept from becoming over wet. For pots, mix in a potting mix rich with peat moss or humus at planting.
Water and feed. Water well and keep a layer of mulch over the roots. After the spring flowering, apply a fertiliser to support the next flush.
Pruning. Prune after flowering in spring. Cut back any long, bare stems to keep the bush full and compact.

Common questions
How is Double Apollo different from Apollo?
Double Apollo has frilled flowers with many petals, while Apollo has single flowers. The colours, size and care are otherwise the same.
Does it need a lot of feeding?
It flowers best with a feed after the spring flowering and mulch to hold moisture. Beyond that, keep it well watered and sheltered.
Can I use it as a hedge?
Yes, as a low hedge. Plant 70cm apart and prune after flowering. Expect a hedge of about 1.5m rather than a tall screen.
