Escapade Aloe (Aloe hybrid 'Escapade') is a compact succulent that grows 20 to 30cm tall and about 30cm wide. Its flat, smooth, broad leaves are bluish-green with faint white speckles and a contrasting peachy-orange edge. It looks as good on a windowsill as it does in a dry garden bed.
Why you'll love it
-
An orange outline. The peachy-orange leaf margins draw a neat line around every bluish-green leaf.
-
Smooth, not spiky. The leaves are flat and smooth rather than toothed, so it is easier to handle than many aloes.
-
Speckled detail. Faint white speckles add texture without making the plant busy.
-
Thrifty with water. Aloes require little water, and this one is easy care.
-
Indoors or out. It does well in well lit rooms and in outdoor dry gardens and landscaping.
Where it works best
Waterwise garden beds. Plant 40cm apart in groups of three or five for a clustered, sculptural effect. The cool blue-green leaves look good beside grey foliage and pale gravel.
Pots and windowsills. At 30cm wide it fits a medium pot. Put it in your brightest window and turn the pot now and then so it grows evenly.
Growing Escapade Aloe in Australia
Position and climate. Plenty of sun suits it best. It grows well from subtropical coasts through the warm temperate belt to Mediterranean and arid regions. It needs protection from frost, so where winters are cold, grow it in a pot that can move under cover.
Soil. Free draining soil in a pot or in the garden. Heavy soils hold too much water, so mound the bed or add grit.
Water and feed. Water weekly in warm weather and sparingly in winter, letting the mix dry between drinks. A half-strength organic liquid feed in spring is all the feeding it needs.
Pups and tidying. Small plants form around the base over time. When a pot is crowded, separate them and pot them on or give them away, and trim off dry lower leaves.
What to expect when it arrives
We sell Escapade Aloe as tube stock, a young plant in an 80mm deep tube that establishes quickly. Tube stock arrives as a small rosette, and the peachy-orange edging becomes more defined in good light. Plant it in a sunny, free draining spot and water lightly until it is settled. Tube stock comes from our grower and is not always available. When the grower has none, the tube shows as sold out, and the notify button on the page emails you the day it is back.
Plants are delivered Australia wide, with delivery from $29.95. Every plant is covered by our 30 day healthy plant guarantee.

Common questions
Is it a good indoor plant?
Yes, provided it gets lots of light. A sunny windowsill suits it. In low light it stretches and loses its colour.
How often should I water it?
Weekly in the warmer months, and only sparingly in winter. Always let the mix dry between waterings.
Can I grow it with pets around?
Take care. Aloes are toxic to dogs and cats if chewed, so a high shelf or a fenced bed is the safer home.
